Subject: Chimeras as rhinos?

Well i do like the rhino model but i find it so small. And seeing as the Chimera is slightly larger it looks more likely to fit 10 marines
so do you think this would be a good idea or a terrible idea. In a way a Chimera is kinda fluffy for my chapter but i wouldn't talk about my chapter on this thread.
I think im on the wrong forum forgot to switch to general discussion so if i am please switch me and thanks in advance

Not a good idea, marines don't use chimeras, chimeras aren't designed to be able to transport marines.

As long as you discuss it with your opponent, and they OK it, it should be fine.
I dont think Id have any issue with a person doing this against me, especially since the chimera has a very similar size.

You are free to model your models however you choose. However, you cannot just substitute Chimeras as a transport for Space Marines. They do not have the ability to purchase them in their codex and it would be an illegal list as a result.
If instead, you're planning on using them as "counts as" then there are still a few issues you will have to address:
1) Chimeras do not have the same footprint as a Rhino so you may have issues of LOS, armour facing, etc.
2) Chimeras are a very well known model and it will be confusing for any opponent to remember that they are supposed to be "counting-as" rhinos instead.
3) The weapon loadout will be confusing unless you model them without turrets and snip off the hull-mounted weapon.
4) Rhinos have 3 access points, Chimeras only have 1. Unless you clearly model this you will not have a point to measure your 2" disembark from.
5) Generally it's not acceptable to substitute models for one another in tournaments so you will either have to do extensive conversions (to make it clear they are 'counts as' Rhinos or find tournaments that let you have that kind of flexibility.
Honestly, I don't think it's a good idea at all. It would require so much converting that I think it would be easier to use a modern or WWII model tank kit and 40K it up to count as a Rhino.

I played a 2v2 game a while back where we asked permission to proxy Chimeras as Rhinos because we simply didn't have enough Rhinos for our Rhino Rush lists.
Personally, I'm against it in normal circumstances, but that was a special occasion. We aren't using it every game.
Use the Rhino. It's almost exactly the same size and looks better with Marines.

For a casual game, it'd be fine.
But if you're serious about your marines using Chimeras (which still count as Rhinos) then you should model the Chimeras to match Rhino stats:
- change the weapon loadouts (not too hard, cover the front weapon port and replace the turret or arm it with bolters)
- access points will be much harder - how are you going to add side doors?
- cover the lasgun ports (many IG playes do this anyway)
- not much you can do about the overall hull size, unless you want to do some serious converting :(
- to avoid whining from opponents (especially in a tourney), put some effort into thinking up some fluff reason for such non-standard equipment - logically marines would only use Chimeras if Rhinos were unavailable long-term, not impossible if e.g. their Rhino-producing forgeworld is under attack or similar...

I think there is a limit to an acceptable proxy and this is one example. Personally, I prefer playing against recognisable units and strongly favour WYSIWYG over the alternative. The whole trend of people using one army (or unit) to represent another is annoying. That said, I guess if you matched up the model size and did some serious converting such that the vehicle was clearly no longer a chimera then it might be ok in some games.
As for scale, yeah, the Rhino is way too small for a full squad of power armoured troops but then most of the vehicles aren't accurate. The crew/ passenger compartments and engines are too small and the guns too massive. Everything about the game is off of scale, even the proportions of the figures themselves.
