I'm about to start working with resin models.

A lot of resin models.

What is the best, and easiest to obtain here in the US!, primer for working with resin (after properly cleaning it, of course!)?

Also, I've recently become a BIG fan of priming using grey Gesso.

I'm guessing that Gesso won't work at all with resin, but does anyone know for certain?

Thanks!

I use black Gesso to prime my uncharted seas ships. Resin and metal mix.
Works perfectly.

edit: Sorry, fairly obvious, but wash the figures first.

when I primed my venerable dreadnought, I used chaos black (the GW brush on kind) and brushed it on.... was a bit annoying to work with, but in the end it worked out.

Well I kind of moved near Toronto, actually.

Do they have a brush on primer, or was it the normal translucent acrylic paint?

its not really translucent, but yea, just standard chaos black paint.

thats actually how I prime all my armies... a coat of chaos black brush on primer. I just don't like using sprays...

Apologies If I offend, but DO NOT use GW's brush on paints for Forgeworld stuff. It will chip and flake off and just makes everything bad in the end. Same goes for their's or anyone elses standard spray paints.

After having done dozens of forgeworld pieces (not bragging, just stating qualification to offer advice) I have found the following to work the best every time.

1. Clean all pieces with an automotive degreaser to remove mould release, or use a special resin model cleaner (available at FLGS)
2. Clean with soap and water, just to make sure.
3. Prime model with Automotive primer, usually available in grey or rust red. The key to this primer is it is very smooth and light, but aheres very very well to all surfaces and provides a great base to start from.
4. Either re-prime with your chosen colour via brush or airbrush.
5. Paint model like you normally would from this point on.

They key to the preparation is the auto primer. It makes it so your paint won't flake off later and provides an amazing basecoat to start with, and its quite cheap (buy the good stuff though, not much more expensive ~$6-8 CDN).

Best of luck with your models and if you're in a bind, foundation paints work wonders over resin, but do not water them down.

I use black spray paint from Home Depot. It works fine if you properly clean the models first.

So Gesso prime worked, and no paint flaking down the road?

This is good news!

I use blue from Home Depot, Painter's Touch. And their primers too, for that matter. It works OK on metal (I could probably find better tbh) but I would not use it on Forgeworld unless I knew it would work. Could always do a test model.
