I've just started Dark Angels, but before I started painting anything I was considering how to paint them, either as Pre-Heresy or Current Era Loyalists. I was inspired to try Pre-Heresy by another user's Pre-Heresy Ultramarines (well done on those by the way). Since I can't decide I've left it to you to help me choose how to paint them. If anyone has any picture or media to do with Pre-Heresy Dark Angels then please post it here.

In addition, I thought of this back-story to do with a Dark Angel-like chapter. This story was thought up in about 5 minutes so dont moan if it's happened before or if it's just crap.

The Keepers of the Truth were a company of Dark Angels exiled from Caliban after consipring to overthrow the Chapter Masters. Since then they have roamed the galaxy, spreading what they claim to be the truth behind the Imperium. While not classed as a Chaos Chapter, many Loyalists have tried to hunt them down and redeem them of their heresies, but to no avail. Some have even claimed that strike forces sent to eliminate the Keepers of the Truth have been converted to their cause. If this is true then no mercy must be given to the heretics of the false truth. Since M38.557, the Keepers had been seen across the entire galaxy, and claims that they have been eliminated is *** //ALL RECORDS PURGED//M38.629//INQUIS//HERETIC// ***

Please comment on what you think of this story, and on what era I should base my Dark Angels in.

Thanks,

Valkyrie

Dark Angels wouldn't be exiled from Caliban, particularly since that planet was destroyed during the Horus Heresy. Likewise the Dark Angels would executed, or torture and then execute, any dissenters in their ranks: they're famous for being incredibly ruthless.

Likewise a renegade warband of Space Marines is a renegade warband, whether they've freshly escaped the clutches of defending Imperial Orthopraxy, or have finally turned to the Dark Powers for succor.

I'd say go for building a modern Dark Angel's Battle Company. They look good, and they can do multiple small units well.

Well instead of "exiled", maybe they "escaped before Caliban was eventually destroyed"

That didn't happen either: all of the Fallen were taken by the Chaos Gods and scattered across space and time when Caliban was destroyed.

Do you have a copy of the Dark Angels codex? It has several ideas for Dark Angel successor chapters you might find useful.

How big a force are you thinking of doing? If its not to big why not do a Fallen one?
