THE CURRENT ARMY

This story begins two years after the end of the Storm of Chaos, during a time of rebuilding in the Empire.
Luthor Huss, on order from the Emperor himself, has travelled the breadth and width of the Empire spreading the word of Sigmar. Recently, he awoke from a dream in which Sigmar showed him a dark tower in the midst of a barren desert. Saddling his horse, Luthor immediately headed south, to the Great Desert and the Land of the Dead.
Luthor found himself wandering for many days in search of the mysterious Black Tower of Arkhan. After the fifth day with no water or food, Luthor found himself kneeling with little strength to continue. Bowing his head he gave prayer to Sigmar that he might be granted enough strength to finish what he had started, the opportunity to serve Sigmar by destroying those that opposed him, both in life and those that refused to die. After two hours of prayer and meditation, Luthor began to see the world around him fade and images of death, destruction, and the sounds of war all around him. The undead shambled by him, the stench of decay fresh. These were not the ancient dead of the Great Desert, but the recent dead of the Empire. Luthor even recognized the rolling hills and sparse vegetation, and the waters of the river Stir rushing by. Hefting his mighty warhammer, Luthor began smashing the dead around him, uttering prayers to Sigmar until he finally collapsed from exhaustion.

Upon waking, Luthor found himself in the company of a small retinue of the Knights Panther, the Preceptor and a burly red robed man tending his wounds. It was soon explained that the Knights had been in pursuit of an army of undead raised by the random magic of the desert and led by an Ancient Tomb King, when they were hit by a sand storm. During the storm the Tomb Kings army struck in ambush and, for some time, it seemed that the Knights would be doomed. It was then that Luthor had arrived, his Great Warhammer glowing bright in the storm cutting a path through the undead to the Tomb King himself, destroying what should have never existed to begin with. Soon after, the remaining army returned to dust, and the Preceptor found Luthor on the ground with a great many wounds.

After explaining his vision and what led Luthor to the Knights, Preceptor Franz Feuerbach and the strange fire mage, Angus Fierbran, have agreed to accompany Luthor to Stirland to speak with the Elector Count and figure out what this vision truly means.
Soon after entering into the southern empire, Franz also dispatched a courier to Krugenheim, where his father still rules, to rally whatever troops he could. The first to respond were the Flintloquers, who mustered there regiment quickly and immediately dispatched to Wurtbad.

LUTHOR HUSS, PROPHET OF SIGMAR
Renegade priest, devout worshipper of Sigmar, savior of the Empire. Luthor Huss has been known as all of these titles, but most recently has played a very strategic hand in bringing Valten, the body of Sigmar incarnate, to the Empire in its greatest time of need. He has been hailed as a traitor by many in the clergy for his abrupt distribution of justice to those he deems unworthy to serve Sigmar, and has been hailed as a hero of the Empire by Karl Franz himself. Most recently, Luthor is in search of extinguishing whatever evil awaits the Empire from his most recent visions.

ANGUS FIERBRAN, BATTLE WIZARD OF THE BRIGHT ORDER
At the age of twelve Angus was exiled from his village for setting fire to three houses and the village inn. Though no one was seriously injured, and the village council had no actual evidence that Angus had committed the arson, it was unanimously decided (Angus's father was a sitting councilman) that wherever Angus went, fire followed. Chased from the village with his once friends throwing rocks at him and the threat from the council of a witch hunter enroute, Angus left his home for good. With no where else to go, Angus made his way to Altdorf where he lived on the streets as a torch juggler for two years. One day, after accidentally setting fire to a fruit stand and running from the city watch, Angus met a red robed figure who led him to the College of Fire.

After ten years of training, Angus was encouraged by the Grand Master (as many young mages are) to accompany the Knights Panther on a crusade to the south in order to test some of the skills that he has learned, but soon finding himself at the center of things much bigger.

10th SPEAR REGIMENT, "FIGHTING LIONS"
The 10th Spear Regiment, led by SGT Hanek "One Eye" Kriegof. The 10th Spear have a long history of fighting alongside the Knights Panther. When the Knights Panther first established a chapter house in Talabecland, the Elector Count at the time assigned the 10th as an honorary guard for the chapter. Years later this relationship evolved into the 10th accompanying the Knights south for the Crusades, where they earned the name "Fighting Lions" by protecting the flank of the Knights Panther against overwhelming numbers for three straight days. Though they took heavy losses (nearly 80% of the original regiment were lost) the army was able to achieve victory on the field. Since this day, the Knights Panther have truly accepted them as an honor guard, and the 10th now accompanies them on almost every campaign.

THE FLINTLOQUERS, "TAAL'S FLINT"
Currently led by SGT Phelp Stutgard, the Flintloquers have a long and cherished history as defenders of the southern boundary of Talabecland. First called upon in 2010 to defend against the incursion of the Vampire Counts, they were completely decimated. During the battle of Grim Moor in 2121, soldiers from Talabecland were seen raising the red and yellow colors of the regiment once more and played a decisive role in destroying the army of Konrad Von Carstein. Since then, the regiment has seen action in every conflict that the Grand Duchy has been involved in.

Those knights panther are so oldschool and so beautiful for it.

Again your painting style does real credit to a colour scheme, the red and yellow usually looks too extreme but it looks great here.

Wow, really nice! I, too, love the reds and yellows on your basic troop models... they work together really well!

It seems like the colors on luthor are a little too muted? And I know it's warhammer, but swinging a huge hammer while riding a horse seems kind of silly

Could he get any kind of panther tie-in (if he's going with that squad? If not, nevermind)?

I *finally* did a little work on the horse, deciding to go with more of a white color. The tail and hair and snout will be a bit darker (either dark brown or black, haven't decided yet). Also, got rid of the horrid designs that were on his skirt, I think a straight red will probably be much better on him then anything else. If anyone has any good ideas on something to do with the hem, maybe?

Well, I am going to call the spear regiment done. Not completely happy with them, but I usually am not completely happy with any of the units I finish... lol.

Anyway, here they are.

As usual, lovely subtle colours and a rich feel of character. If I knew I'd be looking at a regiment featuring red and yellow with blue and white detailing, I'd be bracing my eyes, but these go together excellently and are very easy on the eye.

Ok, so here we go with Luthor again. I really want him to look a bit better then my normal rank and file troops, and I want to finish him soon... so, these will be the last WIP photos of him. What does that mean... well, blast away with the critiques already people... no time for dawdling (had to look that one up to check the spelling.. lol)...

meangreen: Thanks, never really thought about it like that mate... glad it works.

I think he needs another highlighting level on the face. Perhaps it's the lighting in these photos but he doesn't seem to leap out as much as the rank and file in the picture above.

Maybe it's the muted colour, dunno.

Well guys, I think we will finally call Luthor done. I highlighted his face a bit more, added some blood streaks to his head, highlighted the tail a little more, did some base work, and a few other little tid bits. I have to say, this model was a royal pain to actually paint. The horses head is pretty cool, but the Luthor model is just... well, was a pain. Anyway, he is done, for better or worse. On a side note, the scripture over the horses eyes says "See no evil" and one of the scriptures on his side says REPENT. The rest is just scribble. Enjoy and throw me a vote if you get a chance. As always, I will update the beginning of the thread with a bit of history and add these pics to the rest of the finished pics, so if you have not seen the rest of the finished stuff, you can scroll back through the beginning of the thread.

VOTE AT CMON: Luthor Huss

MeanGreen: Thanks, I gave him another go... but the sculpt of the face is just soooo.... frustrating. I love the dark look to him, but it was really hard to get those stark highlights on him for some reason. I also added a bit of blood to his face, so that might help a little.

Ok, so long time no update on the empire... but I am sure some of you guessed it was coming.

Finished up a total of 15 handgunners, 5 more and I will call the unit done.

I am getting closed to finished on that last rank of handgunners, but in the meantime I pulled this Wizard off the shelf of things done a few years ago. I did not do much new to him, except modify the base a little (added the dark spots around the flames and painted the sides of the base with walnut). During the original modelling, I had shaved all the saddle bits off of him and added all the flames with green stuff.

Anyway, hope you like!

CMON: http://www.coolminiornot.com/128075

So, lets see, what else is on the table:

Empire: Finishing the last rank of handgunners, likely the next 24 to 48 hours.

Dwarfs: Finishing the last rank of Slayers, likely the next 24 to 48 hours.

Orcs and Goblins: Started the weapon bits on Skarsnik. Still working the scales on Gobbla (what a pain they are proving to be).

Beasts: Started the test model, still not convinced on the skin color.

Mortals of Chaos: Finished basing the third rank of marauders. Ready for priming.

Ogres: Still working up the first rank (mostly on that huge banner... )

Demons: Pulled a model from the shelf to help me think about finishing what I once started...

Vamps: Sick of skeletons... maybe this months new release will get me rolling again.

Skaven: Trying hard not to think about them... but getting inspired by the Forge World model.

Assembly: Forge World Theodore Bruckner and Reaper (this model comes with a mounted and dismounted version... was disappointed to find that the mounted version is missing both arms and the rear part to the saddle... going to have to email Forge World), Forge World Skaven Brood Horror with Warlord (very stunning and massive model), Herald of Tzeentch on Flying Disk.

I have to take a minute now to talk about the various types of casting. Obviously metal alloy casts will always be my favorite to paint for painting purposes, but have always proven to be a pain in coverting and pinning. The models coming out now in plastic are pretty spectacular, and pretty nice to paint as well. Some of the newer techniques don't seem as appealing to me, the materials used in both Forge World models (though these are not HORRIBLE but do require lots of trimming) are not too bad, but the material being used in the new Finecast models from GW seem to be a bit annoying (and quite limp when it comes to the weaponry). Ranting done. On a side note, I was browsing through some reaper stuff this morning and thought I saw a newer model from the Warlord range that looked to be cast in plastic. Any confirmation on this?

Well, after having no power and finally breaking down to buy a generator... I can finally post the finished handgunners

And to vote at CMON: http://www.coolminiornot.com/296818

I will be going back in the thread later today as well to update the "story line" as well.

Soooo.... what is up with everything else:

Empire: Will finish the Knights Panther that I started last year (only really started two of them, plan to flesh the unit out to 10). I am torn on one thing, and that is that I have 9 soldier models, and 1 of the old Panther Grand Master. IMO, the old grand master as a full fledged lord (model wise) just doesn't compare to the types of heroes that are being produced today. I already modeled a unit champion... so I am thinking of making this model a HERO level character that will be permanently placed in the unit to give me the nice round 10. Painting wise I suppose it doesn't matter, they all 10 get painted Any opinions?

Skaven: Modeling the base for the Forge World Skaven Warlord on Brood Horror. Will be the first model that I start in the Skaven army.

Daemons: Pulled the old Reaper Lord of the Abyss off the shelf that I had started working on a few years back. Going to make him into a Daemon Prince for the Daemon army.

Mortals of Chaos: Once the weather turns decent (or at least semi decent) I will prime that next rank of marauders.

Dwarves: Nearly finished on the Slayers, should have an update soon.

Ogres: Probably 70% done on the first rank of Bulls. I will try to get an update posted soon.

Orcs and Goblins: Weapons, black robes, red bits. Started re-doing the scales a bit after looking at some completed ones on CMON. Overall it seems that most people are having the same issue with the scales, they just don't look that good. The best ones I have seen have had small stripes coming down the center of the scale (first time I have seen scales done like this). Any suggestions? If you search skarsnik on CMON you will see what I mean. Will post an update soon.

Vampire Counts: Still working that last rank of skeles, honestly haven't done anything with them in the last week. Really won't take that much to finish them... just looking for the right kick in the bottom I suppose.

MR MERLIN: Thanks mate
