ok, so after a look at all the Warmachine Books and doing some research, I am still lost. I am looking either into a Cryx or Cygnar force, which should i start with any hints/tips? I know this is a redundant question and I cringe asking these, but I just have little experience in the game and have looked at it from the outside for a long time now. I like aggressive play style, the forces of Cygnar seam a more balanced force from what i can tell mixing the Warjacks (that's right?) and ground troops pretty evenly, where as cryx i am not sure where they stand as an army on the table.

How do the two of them play? should I look into the starter kit for both and play with the two to see which I like (hell, if I like the both even).

and finally which books should i get for the rules, that is the most confusing yet.

thanks for all the help.

You may use anything I post, just remember to give me credit if used somewhere else.

Get the free rules for Warmachine Mk2, the new revision of the basic rules, from the Privateer Press website. This version is available in next January and I wouldn't get the Mk1 rule books anymore.

I agree, Downloading the MKII rules and getting the boxes is probably the best idea. A nice thing is that the MKII quickstart rules including printable cards for the battlebox minis are also available on the PP site. I'd start by getting one or both boxes and downloading and printing those rules.

Do as the others have suggested, download MKII for free.

Also check if your store has the books on discount in case you're curious about the fluff. If
you ever want to go through and follow the storyline, the order of the books is

Prime
Escalation
Apotheosis
Superiority
Hordes: Evolution
Legends
Hordes: Metamorphosis

I forget where Hordes: Primal falls in, but there's only a bit of an overlap towards
the end.

Ok so after the books and fluff is figured out, how do the two forces play? What are strengths and weaknesses, what kind of style are they best in, what roles do various units play in their forces, what is standard in the armies etc...

In case you didn't know all ready. While the basic game mechanic rules are available online as has been pointed out, the rules for the individual models come on a card with the models. Really there isn't a huge reason to buy the rulebooks for the individual model descriptions and rules. Most of the battleforce box sets I have seen come with a copy of quick start rules which cover basic game mechanics. This should be plenty to get you started without having to invest in the MKI rules books.

These are all good points. Like I just told our friend on the other thread, now is a good time to start for cheap. I would also add that if you like the "Steampunk" aspect of the game, then Cygnar is the purest distillation. They are kind of the MEQ "Ultramarines" of the game, if you come from 40k. They are, however, a bit less forgiving to start than Cryx. It really all depends on your flavor, though. If you like the game itself, then you will be drawn to any of these forces, for one reason or another; they are really well balanced.
One thing you might want to do, if you are still at a standstill, is look at the Individual Warcasters each faction has, and pick from that. That choice, in some ways, is more important than that of the faction you play.

Hordesrimal goes in between Apotheosis and Superiority.

I am currently reading all the fluff from the books in order, so I figured it out by printing dates.

There's also interim fluff in the No Quarter magazines.

I should dig up that fluff index they put in No Quarter once and give it the once over.

Which issue of NQ had the index?

Also, do you know how much the IK RPG fluff ties into WM/H?
