Rattling guns are not bound by the mainstay rule. They lack any choice profile b/c they are bought under the unit that bought them. Sorry for the redundancy, but 1:30 AM is not kind to my thinking.

thanks just wanted to make sure also if anyone knows does the ratling gun count as part of the clanrat groop. like can someone target it if its still within those 3 inches of the clanrat group? mainly because i play vampire counts alot and they have a spell that target all of my unit providing wounds so does it target my ratling gun and clan rats oor are they targeted seperatly?

Yes, you can target it if you have LOS to it.
The rules for weapons teams only state they count as the same size, and so cant be targetted because they are the same size. This is what allowed 6th ed characters the ability to run around without being shot.
7th ed however doesnt care about what base size you are - if you can be seen you can be shot.
The end result is that you can't be shot because you are a differnet size, but you CAN be shot because you are in LOS meaning the end result is you can be shot.

Simple answer to the your ratling guns getting destroyed: don't use them.
Ratlings are fun, fluffy and super destructive. I chose to restrict myself to 2, then take 2 units of 8 jezzails which after are more reliable, and kill things easier. I use my ratlings to take target of opportunity shots. Hiding behind terrain, firing when opponents comes arounds. Setting up shooting into combats. I never leave them out in the open unless I have to.

Same here.
Keep them behind your rats, in woods etc - just dont expect to be able to advance with them too easily.
You can set up horrid crossfires with them though, hatred pursuing units is always fun

When units are frenzied: don't be afraid to force them to chase your ratling gun or be drawn into a stand and shoot. Even heavy cav can get stranded with skaven flee rules. Its always better to loss a ratling gun on turn 6 of a GT game, instead of losing a unit of less expensive slaves that could be holding or contesting a table quarter. The nature of the skaven book lets you be sneaky, kinda under hannded and cut throat, play it to your advantages.
