OKAY, so the title may be slightly, um, what's the word...exaggerative? BUT, it's not wholy untrue, i mean with this method you can get at least 30 Boyz done in an hour or so. It might not be pretty, but it's quick!
You will need:
Chaos Black Undercoat
Blood Red (<<< This colour should be changed to fit in with your army, e.g red for speek freeks, yellow for da flashy teefy boyz, etc).
Tin Bitz
Chainmail/Boltgun Metal
Bestial Brown
Any Green, medium or dark, it's your choice (i chose Catachan green which is mid-dark).
STEP 1:
Prime your minis chaos black...this should take approx. 2 minute and then 20 mins drying time.
STEP 2:
Paint lots of detailed checks/stripes all over your models' armour in your chosen army colour (i chose blood red). This is the only time-consuming bit, but if you want you can just paint the whole armour in this colour.
STEP 3: (As the Orks would say: "Da fun bit..."
Get a fairly large brush and roughly drybrush your models from head to toe in tin bitz. Make sure you leave some black showing for effect, but not too much. Don't worry about going over skin or anything, that doesn't matter! Now do this one model at a time, and get a piece of kitchen towel. Each time you cover a model in tin bitz, dab at the armour bits with your kitchen towel so that the red (or whatever colour) patterns begin to show through. Already you should have some rusty lookin' orks with scratched and worn armour.
STEP 4:
Drybrush the models again, but this time with chainmail or boltgun metal, and do it much lighter. The amount you put on depends on how dark you want the final models to be. Sometimes it is better to use a bigger brush for this so not as much goes onto the model. Now you should have batches of Ork veterans who look like they've just returned from battle - perfect! Only one problem; the skin.
STEP 5:
Paint all the skin green (i used catachan green), leaving black/tin bitz showing in the recesses.
STEP 6:
Paint any showing leather bestial brown, and then give the whole model a black ink wash if it looks too light.
TA- DA!!! this sounds easy and ineffective, but try it on a single ork model and look at the results...
PICS!!!! (Although looking at my pics on here in 14 megapixel detial doesn't make them look good, a horde on the tabletop looks perfectly orky!)
..::MANY OF THE MODELS IN THE PICTURES WERE NOT UNDERCOATED 'CAUSE I WAS IN A HURRY::..

Might give this a try... The only thing I would change is the skin... Seems like you can get alot out of armour and wot not, with this method. However the skin only has a single green skin tone... Ill give it a go though!

I really need to see pics before I can comment properly. To be honest, the combination of black undercoat and black wash at the end would seem to leave the model looking too dark, but without pictures theres no way to say for sure.

I am shooting some pics of my very own orks right now...and the black wash at the end isn't necessary, it says only do it i the model looks too light. this could occur if you were using a lighter green for the skin, eg goblin green, or a lighter brown, eg snakebite leather...

Yeah if you wanted to win a golden demon i would NEVER try this method, but if you need a bunch of orks painted for an apocalypse game which is tommorrow then this is great. (in fact, that was my exact situation when i came up with this method!) Anyway, as for the green on the skin, if you leave black in the creases then it actually looks pretty decent without a highlight. I first planned to give my orks a bleached bone highlight to make the veins 'bulge', but like i say i didn't think they needed it and it would have took too long IMO.

If your looking to paint up an army to 3 color standards very quickly, then this isn't a bad idea. There's lots of little things that could be done to add detail and more variety of color, but I suppose that for some people, just having a painted army is all that matters.
Honestly though, some type of wash over the skin would really make that stand out better. It wouldn't add a whole lot of extra time, and GW's green wash would, I think, really make the skin stand out better.

Exactly, it's not pretty, but it's quick. Every photographed model was painted in a single night ready for an apocalypse game the following day. I was quite impressed with the results of the technique i used so i'm just sharing it. It's not going to win you a golden demon, but a horde looks fine.

Yeah, I have to say, they turned out better than I expected them to be. Certainly good enough for a 3-color tabletop tournament standard.

I hate to rain on your parade but the bare grey showing through really ruins it. It's still pretty decent but actually undercoating them would have been a huge improvement.

They look OK. I'd wash the skin with devlon mud and paint the teeth, though. This would be a good way to get everything to a decent tabletop standard that can be improved upon later. They look pretty good for only taking an hour.

why do people try to do so many models that fast i understand if you have quick hands and do them fast(er) but it seems that people either take hours a model or minutes

Some people don't have much time to spend painting, either through other commitments (family, work, kids, etc) or due to up-coming deadlines ("Dang, the tourney is in a week, and I haven't even started on that Green Tide yet!").
Others just don't like to spend evening after evening pouring over their toys when they could be actually fighting with them!
I sure like to see a paint-job that looks OK, rather than a slap-dash one, or no paint/just primer, so a quick way of getting a nice effect is appreciated.
Our (very small) group varies from one end of the spectrum to the other.
I have some time, and a lot of orks to paint. Speed-painting techniques are handy, but not essential.
The Guard has never painted before, and has two platoons bought from various e-bay sellers to strip/paint/convert. We're happy to play proxy/counts-as/noon- WYSIWYG, but its good to look good!
Chaos/'Nids has no time, and no inclination to paint, so buys pre-painted.
Grey ka'Nigets has no time, and wants all his guys to look Worthy Of The Emperor, so doesn't play much! :(
Automatically Appended Next Post: Nice technique, KnorneyCob, I'll have to test it out.
I do my ork skin gobbo green with black wash - simple but effective.

Yep like i said these weren't undercoated because this is the situation i was in:
It was Friday 25th Sep, about 8:00pm. I had the best table in warhammer world booked for a 4,000pt apoc game with two mates (if you want to find them on dakkadakka they are called 'Helbrecht' and 'The Acolyte' ). This game was on the next day (Saturday the 26th). Helbrecht had 2,000pt of Black Templars, The Acolyte had 2,000 points of Grey Knights, and I had 2,000 points of Chaos and 1,500 points of *unpainted* Orks. They were playing together as a team total of 4,000pts, i was on my own with 3,500 points and two strategic assets.
So, there was no time to undercoat (i live in rochdale and so it's a few hours to get to Nottingham in the car, as we were going to be staying at my grandma's house overnight who lives there). Anyway, i hadn't painted any of my orks yet so there was no time for a colour scheme, i just did the technique above and was impressed at the fact that it was only 9:00pm when i had finished. So, we got in the car and i wrote an army list whilst on the journey which totalled 1,500pts, and then by 11:00pm we were at my grandma's house.
The next day we had the biggest and best game we've played so far (and i won!). Our table was awesome, as well, comprising of a massive imperial fortress with crashed titans and super-heavies all over it. Want some pics?
These were taken on a mobile phone so excuse the quality:
The HUGE fortress gained a lot of popularity with passers-by, and people took approx. 56 pictures of our game during the day!
The Black Templars LRC storms through a ruined wall (where it met my plaguereaper and got 'boomed'!)
Inquisitor Solomon Lok and his retinue prepare for the oncoming tide of Khorne Bezerkers:
The forces of the Imperium Hold the Walls:
Stormtroopers wet their pants as they onlook the tide of chaos and orks coming at them:
The Chaos and Ork forces begin the assault:

The metals look good, but one quick wash of Gryphonne Sepia would do absolute wonders for the skin.
Nonetheless, I'm extremely impressed by how quickly you pulled it off. That's an army I'd be happy to play on the tabletop.

One different step would be to paint the skin with Iyanden Darksun (Yellow Foundation) and wash with two coats of the Thrakka Green. That would give you a deep green with nearly yellow highlights that I think would work out nicely.
Also, instead of Tin Bitz, wash the boltgun metalics with Devlan Mud. That gives a nice light rust effect.

I'm always envious of people that can paint fast and be happy with the result. I'm far, far from being a pro, but darn near every detail/color gets:
1. Primed
2. Basecoat
3. Washed
4. Drybrush Highlight 1
5. Drybrush Highlight 2
6. Glazed (sometimes, if it looks too chalky)
Sometimes, not always, but sometimes, I get froggy enough to practice blending somewhere in there.
And this is why it takes me two weeks of somewhat consistant work to get a tabletop quality squad done.
It does seem like you can go a heck of a lot faster once you get your colors picked out, but I swear I don't notice all that much difference between painting a single mini and painting assembly line short of dry times. Guides like this help give me a lot of insight as to how folks do it though!
