WOW! That is an amazing video Bat Rep. To be fair I also enjoyed your Bat Rep as well Bear. Both of you keep up the good work, and may you inspire more people to make such great videos.

Agreed, just watched Iron Bear's as well and it was a lot more entertaining. The orks had so much character and the necron's voice was hilarious. Loved the creepy monolith sound effect
Iron Bear, thanks for posting this here... glad to see people are enjoying it so far. I just wanted to say that I really like the editing and pacing in your video as well as the voices. It will be interesting to see what we can come up with next time
As for all the other responses... thanks for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed my video. Battle reports can be fun with the proper planning... and I think a combination of Iron Bear's video and my own would be something cool to behold indeed.

Wow, so many new video battle reports lately, but this is by far the best I've seen (Next to Irobears video). More, more!

I agree that a melding of your two respective geniuses would be great. I mean, that kind of clear showing of what happened, mixed with the 'fun' and camp factor of the cheesy voices... awesome.

Oh man, nice. This is the direction I'm hoping to take my bat reps, but I'm still stuck with just imovie. I really really wish I had access to after effects again. :(

Yeah, there has been a plethora of them floating around lately... hopefully there will continue to be more in the future. I'll be adding turns 4 to 7 in the next month or two. I have a bunch of new effects and such I want to try out :-).

I've never really tried my hand at video editing though. What kinds of programs did you use to make this sterling report?
The main program for all the compositing is Adobe After Effects 4.0 (which is ancient... it's from 1998... but it gets the job done). I also used Adobe Photoshop 5.5 for some photo editing and alpha masking and I used windows movie maker to combine all the clips and overlay the music tracks. Oh, and all the explosions, bullet hits and other effects footage came from http://www.detonationfilms.com/ these guys have awesome footage for video editing. I'm going to be buying some of their high quality stuff next time around instead of just using their freebies.

After Effects rocks... even the old versions. After Effects is really key to making these reports work... sadly the new version CS4 costs a lot of money (I WISH I had that!). You can get older legitimate versions on Ebay though... like 5.0 and upwards for reasonable prices.

Fantastic! Very well done. How does the recording process impact the game though? I'm always worried about slowing the game down too much when I make my batreps, but mine are just a few snapshots of the table with some quick notes after every round.
Although it looked like the Marines pretty much had things wrapped up. I don't know how much turns 4-7 would add. Great effects though.

Thanks for the encouragement . To answer your question... yes... creating a battle report like this does slow the game down significantly. Basically you have to do a lot of planning ahead and make sure that you have an area that can be left undisturbed for a few nights. It's just a different animal... still image battle reports can still be great entertainment and are certainly the original source of inspiration for this video.
Seriously though, video ones with animations like I've done are really time consuming (especially the first time around)... both in the time it takes to play the game of warhammer and record images as well as the post production.

Glad you liked it. The game itself was closer than you might think due to me horribly misjudging the amount of time it would take to capture objectives. Also, the whirlwind with it's cover denying missiles was just plain friggin' evil.

Its not like playing a regular game. You have to think about things a great deal more, and things take time. My Ork vs Necron video took about 8 hours to play and shoot. Then another 2 weeks (in my free time) to edit and post. I think you just have to understand its going to take a long time.
One suggestion I would make is to have the person recording the game NOT be a player. I played the Orks in that video and it took a lot of effort to remember to make shots and then play the game. When I did the Warmachine Batrep it was easier because I was not playing. Of course I annoyed the players (Wait, don't move that... I didn't get a shot of it yet...).

no kidding. I'm working on my second one now and boy do games take a lot longer when you have to stop for so many photos... The one I'm working on now is over 200 photos.

This is also very good advice. The first one I did I played and it was a bit of a mess. I've learned my lesson and stayed out of the game the second time, but my players got a bit annoyed with me interrupting so often.

Hey do they wanna be stars on the interweb or do they wanna play a game in less than 4 hours? Tell them to pull up their big-gamer pants and deal!
This may not be entirely on topic, but I can't seem to find Iron Bear's battle report that everyone here is talking about. Could anyone give me a link or something? Much thanks!
Very impressive, I have to say that was amazing! Great fun to watch; here's hoping for more! =)

Looking for fun articles on painting, tactics and wargaming? Are you after a new regular blog to follow? Are you a bit bored with nothing better to do?
If the answer to any of the above is 'well, I guess' you could probably do worse than read my blog! Regular wargaming posts, painting and discussions

Thanks AzurePhoenix, Iron Bear, and Big-Squig for the info about the actual creation process for these. It looked like something that needed to be more coordinated than mine and from what you say it is probably even more involved than I thought. Mine are always like -
"Hey you wanna do a battle report of this game?"
"OK"
I'm totally inspired though. I do know someone with the effect programs you guys mentioned so maybe I can find a couple of local players willing to help us try this ourselves.
