Hello! This year i am planning on entering the UK 'schools league' and I need to design a solid 600pts army within thier requirements, which is essentially at least 1 HQ, 2 Troops, no more than 1 elite choice, and 1 heavy support OR fast attack choice. Last year i entered with Tau and was defeated in a single game against the most...annoying...kan army (the requirements were different last year). Anyway, here is a IG list I was thinking of.....help wanted! Crisicism needed! p.s this list is from memory, so may not be 100% points accurate.
HQ
Company command squad with carapace armour, flamer and 105pts
master of ordnance
Troops
10 veterans 70pts
10 veterans 70pts
Chimera 55pts
Heavy
2 Leman Russ' 300pts
TOTAL 600pts

I think it's too heavy support heavy, you're spending half of your army for 2 vehicles that although they're armor 14, they're not that hard to wreck.
No special weapons on the veterans, once they capture a point, they can't keep it. Assuming they get that far.
Battle Cannons alone won't win you the game, I don't know if the UK school league plays with the normal rules, but 2/3's of missions are objective based.
Also, I think you'd have more luck with a hell hound than a Leman Russ because chances are you'll be playing against some footslogging armies at such a low point value.
What about something like this?
CCS - 120
Melta Gun, Flamer
Chimera
Veteran Squad x 10 - 155
Melta Gun x 3
Chimera
Veteran Squad x 10 - 155
Melta Gun x 3
Chimera
Leman Russ - 170
Heavy Bolter Sponsons

I tried a 500pt game which consisted of;
1x CCS + Lascannon
2x Penal legion (Much more effective at the cheaper end of things and more mobile)
1x Devil dog
1x Leman russ battle tank.
If you included another penal legion squad @ the 600pt level, I think you'll find you will be able to overwhelm a lot of players simply by fielding 30models at such a small points level

I see... Would carapce armour be preferable for the veterans then, to keep them alive and capturing objectives?
Its just that, via the rules we will play, transports are a seperate kill points. Chimeras are an easy kill, and so are veterans without carapce. The russ' would be hard to destroy when there are two in a squadron. Also, when I went last year, there were too many ork armies to count! So maybe a hellhound will do it. The boards were very small too. However, because special characters are allowed this year, I don't wanted high strength template weapons to instant kill them. Characters are risky at low points, but a lucky one can...well...you know.

Seems good, if you want an anti-ork army it's simple, just get some AP4 weapons in there such as heavy bolters.

I reckon you should try to give the veterans a little bit more kick, other than that seems good to me.

With what exactly?
I would give the veterans special weapons, but to keep the russ' and do that I would need to take upgrades of the command squad, which equals easy kill-point.
