The FLGS has undergone new management, and the new owner is busy making it not suck any more. He's adding in Flames of War, Warmachine, Avatars of War, new scenery, gaming nights, beverages, and all the other things a real FLGS should have(there was nothign there before, it was terrible). Anyway, he said that after much humming and hahing, he settled on selling Coat d'Arms instead of vallejo or citadel. Now he was singing it's praises to me, gave me a pot for a colour I was trying to mix, and promised a refund if I didn't like it, but I was wondering about the brand in general, as I've never heard of it before.

Any of you guys have any experience with this brands, and how it matches up to Citadel and Vallejo?

I'm moving this to P&M. You are more likely to get an answer there.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

I believe Coat d'Arms is the old citadel paint line from the late eighties.
The bottle seal very well, I just went through my paints and I have a couple of colors (Hawk Turquoise and Blood Angels Orange) that are still good.
Their texture and coverage is a lot like Vallejo.
Much like Vallejo, they're not as good form base coats or coverage. (For which I would use Polly or GW Foundation mixes)
They are better for detail work, like Vallejo.
I am unsure of their pigmentation/medium ratio.
Also, I never used their metallic paints, so I don't know how they compare to other manufactures.

Belphegor is correct. Cote 'd Arms is the "original" GW paints. GW switched from Cote d' Arms when they went to first the 'screw-cap' and now the flip top bottles.

The Cote d' Arms paints work as well as, or better than the current GW paints. You get more in the bottle as well.

However, the colors are the "original" GW colors in some respects, bleached bone, for example. The CdA paint is darker in color than the GW.

Most of the paints are easy to figure out the colors. I've recently been re-buying CdA paints, since, as above, I have some of the original bottles from 10+ years ago that are still good.

Coat D'arms are budget paints.
However they are also very good paints.
If I had a local stockist near me, when ever I ran out of a GW colour I would buy Coat D'arms.
Ive been at this game for over 20 years now & still use some of the original paints (I don't paint as much as I should).
The pots are great & I've never had issues with pots drying out.
I recently went to a convention in Germany (visiting the folks) & picked up rotting flesh (as my original 22 year pot was was almost out) & some Dark Angels Green which GW don't make any more.

Highly recommended.

Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!!
