I have the standard version of Fallout 3 (without the expansions) and I've got up past Megaaton City and that's it, I seem to have lost interest in it, need to get back into it somehow..

Watch out for the targeting AI, or more to the point that lack of targetting AI. Ian and other companions will full auto fire at the enemy regardless of what else is in front of the gun.
It was programmed by Americans so I suppose a bit of friendly fire is to be expected, but Ian will unleash a whole SMG clip at a distant enemy when you are right in front of him, it wont hurt the enemy but will cut you in half.
Generally it is better to equip companions will melee and single shot weaponry or get a high agility and move first out of their LOS.

Yeah, I started playing and thought it was pretty decent. Then I couldn't put it down, then I couldn't sleep, then the sores came!
Anyway, a year has gone by and I am STILL playing it! Well, mostly because PS3 just got the DLCs but either way, great F-ing game!
My "bad" character made me feel somewhat dirty. Not the bullying and such but some, uh, mission choices and their resolutions. Of course, you are probably not there yet. Mwa-ha-ha-ha!

Fallout 3 will eat your soul. And by that I mean it's awesome.
I do have one complaint with the game though; its color palette consists of gray, dark gray, and light gray. And a little red.

Whats all this fallout 3 nonsense lol.
I now have the power armor, a laser gatling gun and most of my stats are in the 90s. I feel like a terminator with an assault cannon, just traveled through the vortex into Necromunda. Man this is great lol

In the original fallout games I can remember the first time I really loved it.
I was playing as a "good" character, until finally an NPC annoyed me too much, and I realised with relish that I could turn to the side and hit his grandmother in the crotch with a sledgehammer.
Never has a purer statement of annoyance been made.

Ah Fallout 1, how I love thee.
I've really loved playing that game through in all kind of ways.
The standard good guy
The doctor Jekkyl/Mr Hyde where at a location I'd first do all the (good) quests, and when there were no more quests I massacred the entire population. I even went through the Brotherhood.
Evil bastard. Like the above but with evil quests or simply murdering all around.
Small Guns Nut
Energy Weapons nut
HtH nut
Sledgehammer nut (real fun, the insane clubber, the Super Sledge was his end weapon, he killed every last opponent in melee, except the Master IIRC, I believe you couldn't go toe to toe with him
Scientist
Thief
Smooth Talker
Yeah, I went through that game a lot of times.

FO3 offers the same degree of character variation (bar a couple of quite major "be lovely or be a bastard" plot choices). I heartily recommend it.
I'm playing a melee-only char now (melee, traps and explosives - no firearms. Dart gun allowed for fun), and the best weapon for melee (or at least my personal favourite) requires the hand of a deathclaw. Killing a deathclaw with no guns has proven to be VERY fun.

Yeah, that Death Claw Gauntlet slices power armor like butter! It is cliche' but true! Ah, what fun!
