hey all!
i have been out of warhammer for a while and only just got back into it so i have older (red fronted) rule book not newer (white fronted) one. as a consequence my rule knowledge may be little rusty.
my question is this.
as far as im aware shamans cannot wear armour or magic armour as it stops them casting.
does this however mean they cannot be given sheilds. eg enchanted sheild? does this still count as armour and so have same effect?
i ask because i am not sure and also because i would like advise on how best to protect an orc shaman (whos in a unit) if he cant take a sheild.
kind regards
maximosa

Put him on a boar, gives him a 5+ save at least. He cannot have any armor other than that.

Talisman of Protection perhaps? 6+ ward is kinda gak though. I think O&Gs have another ward save item, but it'll be pricey.

...then put him on a boar. In this edition mounted characters are allowed to join infantry units and they even count the space they occupy for determining ranks and stuff.

...unless he is US5 or more, which he isn;t.
Also there is NO rule stating that mages cannot cast while wearing armour: instead there is a rule stating that you can only buy magical armour if you can buy the mundane equivalents. THis means essentially only Chaos Warriors get to buy magic armour.
THis is a flip reverse from 6th, and is much clearer imho!

Nos is correct, basically pertaining to your orc and goblins you have a few option. You can go with the boar and some kind of ward, or a savage orc shaman on a boar, which isn't really recommended as your frenzied and you'll go charging out of your unit... but at least its entertaining and fun!

Savage Orc Shamans I find acceptable, so long as you either stick them in another frenzied unit (in which case it doesn't matter as much), or they are kept on foot and put in the dead-center of a unit.
Talisman of Protection is 15pts of magic item that could be better spent elsewhere (unless doing something like Waaagh! Paint + Talisman + Scroll). The Amulet of Protectyness can work, but often times you'll want this on another model (probably one intended to reach combat). The Best Boss 'At is 30pts for a 5+ Ward Save, so you'll rarely use it.
In order of what I think is best? Savage Orc, Talisman, 'At. I rarely put any protection into my mages though, as when they're in a unit either they're already dead (charged by something nasty that a 6+ / 5+ save / ward is going to help against) or they won't be struck in the first place (five Big 'Uns or five Black Orcs attacking first to remove those in BtB with the Shaman).

Remember you can attack individual models to remove them from base contact with the shaman. I also usually find the Lord Shaman being a high toughness comes in handy a lot. Also the savage orc shaman already has a ward save, a talisman of protection really isn't going to do anything extra.

It's also cheaper than buying a Talisman of Protection, in addition to saving magic points. Best reason to take a mundane Orc w/ Talisman is if you plan on putting it in a boar boyz unit, but then why are you sacrificing a front model of your cavalry unit?
Savage Orc's "Frenzy" problem is part of the reason to take one: Only way to ever make the Skull Wand of Kaloth even worth thinking about (it can come in handy at times, when fighting things such as Undead, Skaven, and sometimes Ogres).

I love that Wand, its incredible when it actually works. When I played my orcs I always had it. But I have to say, every time I swung the want I was thinking "what they heck am I doing this for, my mage shouldn't have been in combat?"

My mages almost inevitably wind up in combat. The reason I always feel hesitant is because it reminds my opponents that they can specify attacks. "Oh right, there's a Shaman in there I could hit."
Wishing I took the Skull Wand that one time I challenged Grimgor though with my S-Orc Shaman. Made 3/4 of his 6+ Wards and even managed to lay one hit on Grimgor (if it did nothing). Oh, how that could have turned out.
