Would SM Chapters that already have their own codex, such as SW or DA, be able to take units which are in the generic SM codex, such as Thunderfire Cannons and Vanguard? I would say no on the grounds that they already have their own codex but I would say yes because they are still SM units, and SW and DA are still SM's'.

Can someone please help me with this?

If you use Codex: Dark Angels, you use Codex: Dark Angels ONLY. If you use Codex: Black Templars, you use Codex: Black Templars ONLY. If you use Codex: Blood Angels, you use Codex: Blood Angels ONLY. There was an FAQ or somesuch for the DA saying that if your opponent was fine with a DA army taking the SM stuff, then that was fine, though.

Generally speaking, though; Armies from one codex use ONLY that codex for their gear/units.

(Exceptions being the Daemon/Witch Hunter codices who get to take stuff from SM and IG as well as their own).
