The rules given for Malakai Makaisson (goblin hewer) states that Malakai is treated as a dwarven engineer, but he takes up a character slot in a dwarf army. Do you think that means he acts as a “master engineer” meaning he would get the entrenchment special rule?

What is a youth? Impetuous fire.
What is a maid? Ice and desire.

Except that since he takes up a character slot it implies he is a master engineer and not simply an engineer.

Decrepit Dakkanaut

No, it doesn't
He is a seperate, named character with a specific set of rules. He is in no way shape or form a Master Engineer - as he doesnt have the rules for one.
Stop looking for easter eggs.

The Goblin Hewer was a Storm of Case release, IE with its own rules seperate from the Dwarf Army Book. I think his entry is self explanatory, you could look at it that the "Hero slot" he takes up is because he's a Hero Level Slayer character, that would be more realistic then trying to gain the Master Engineer rules.
