What does the amendment entail? Its pretty easy to criticize a vote based off of what you think is there. If you look at the short description the amendment, suggested by Al Franken, singles out specific companies. Already, I find that to be a problem. Can you go more in depth on what the amendment does?

A company (or companies) has (or have) required some of its employees to have civil cases arbitrated instead of brought to court for some types of claims. It has been proposed that the federal government deny them contract opportunities because of this.
The Seventh Amendment of the U.S. Constitution states: "In suits at common law, where the value in controversy shall exceed twenty dollars, the right of trial by jury shall be preserved, and no fact tried by a jury, shall be otherwise reexamined in any court of the United States, than according to the rules of the common law."
Anuvver fing - when they do sumfing, they try to make it look like somfink else to confuse everybody. When one of them wants to lord it over the uvvers, 'e says "I'm very speshul so'z you gotta worship me", or "I know summink wot you lot don't know, so yer better lissen good". Da funny fing is, arf of 'em believe it and da over arf don't, so 'e 'as to hit 'em all anyway or run fer it.
Thanks orky, I started to read through the amendment, but realized just how tedious and mind-numbing a government resolution is. What is wrong with companies assigning private arbiters? It saves everyone money and it probably enables the the plaintiff to arrive at a timely payoff instead of losing a significant amount of his/her winnings to lawyer fees and having to wait it out in appeals...

Personally, I would have voted against it as well.
If what they are doing is illegal/legally unenforceable then they should be prohibited from doing it or the law should be changed to make the requirement void.
If what they are doing is neither the government should take contracts from whoever is the best candidate.
Denying them contracts as "punishment" is waffling in the extreme.

Regardless though, the government should not be singling out individual companies, especially when it is not in Congress' jurisdiction to do so. The legislative branch is there to enact laws and it is the executive branch's responsibility to enforce them. If there is a loophole and it needs to be closed then close it. But this is not that. Franken is clearly trying to enforce something on these specific companies. If you value the separation of powers, how could you not vote against it?

The government is constitutionally required to try the case by jury. There's nothing a corporation can do to change that.
My guess would be there's a penalty imposed by the company for refusing to comply with the company's regulations (possibly brought to civil court as well, ironically).

This doesn't touch separation of powers; Congress has the power of the purse. Otherwise, they need to retract the defunding of ACORN.

Actually the two situations are quite different. The actions taken by the listed companies are valid points of violation of employees rights, whereas ACORN was several employees caught in a major ethics scandal. So one might be able to be prosecuted as a company, the other was done on the initiative of single employees. Congress cancellation of funding for ACORN was the shedding of political baggage, but this is much more direct and aggressive.

Here is the reasoning on why this amendment was put forth. I seriously doubt some of you will even bother to watch it and just continue on with your idiotic blathering. Those that do watch it though and still say they would vote against it, I really question your values and morals.
Mandatory arbitration is common in business. Its also common in all kinds of contracts. All those papers you sign to see a doc will include it somewhere as well.
Further, many state jurisdictions now require before most cases.
The fact the law targets Halliburton shows the intent.
Would be easy to blow this out as unconstitutional...just saying.

Surely someone would have the means to sue, I mean really though; punch them in the nuts sue, with the thousands of... wait, you are broke how now with the what in the... bye.
Yes, and purple employees have the same rights as all of the others. So the story goes, and the plot fails to really address my concerns. Maybe we will get good out of this (is sounds like it), maybe not though. As far as I am concerned, collect the involved and put them through the same experience as their crimes. Simple, dimple, pudding and pie.

I guess some of you think that gang rape without legal action in a criminal court is acceptable.
1. No we just find hyperventilation on a topic not acceptable. Please come back and discuss the topic when you're an adult.
2. Besides ever been in a court? speaking of gang rape...
To your point KK, there are many ways to get out of arbitration, and it don't mean much vs. violations of actual laws.
