Subject: To Vox or not to Vox: A question on the uses of voxcasters

Ok, well, for those of you who have IG armies, let me ask you this: Are vox casters worth the points you spend on them?
Supposedly, here are the benefits:
Allow you to re-roll failed orders.
Can allow you to reroll an "Incompetent Command" result, potentially saving your butt.
The only detractions are:
Although they're cheap, imagine having a vox caster in every one of your infantry squads. If you're running an infantry heavy army, that could easily add up to 40 or 50 points right there.
So I guess the question is, are vox casters really worth it? Do the benefits outweigh the cost?
Thanks for your consideration!

Voxes are worth it when you have mobbed up squads. Take a bunch of squads with heavies, mob them up, give on a vox, and give the CCS a vox. For ten points you have a better chance of twinlinking your fire base.
I'm not sure it's the best 10 pts you can spend, but it's not bad. As a general rule, if you actually want to rely on orders, consider voxes. If you view them as potential bonuses, then leave them at home.

As I play almost entirely mech, I never take Voxes (would 'voces' would be the correct Latin? It's been a while...) but I agree that they can potentially have their place.
Like Polonius said, if it doesn't seem like it would be vital to your build (his example was excellent), then there's really no reason to waste the points. They fall into the same category that Extra Armour, Heavy Stubbers and Dozer Blades do for me. Fine if you have extra points to throw around, but I always seem to have better stuff I'd like to buy.

The key with vox casters is that your paying points for an upgrade that only helps with a single special rule. They're not really a general use item. If you use orders a lot, then buy a few voxes. If not, then don't.

My IG army isn't built up around Orders. I merely see them as an added bonus.
In my last three games I have given an order once and it was Move Move Move.
So unless you build an infantry heavy army, then no.

Yep, depends on your army build. Mine is a couple of platoons with some tank support, so for me, they're worth it. In my 1850 list, I spend 25 points on them. And that may drop to 15.

If you run a mostly foot infantry list voxes might be worth it but the opportunity cost of losing a special weapon in the command squad is more of an issue then the 5 points they cost. You can only have 3 special weapons in your command squad if you take a vox.

Hmm. It does make sense to leave them out if you're running an army with only a few infantry elements.
Cool! Thanks guys!

I generally run a Vox Network if I have the points. I would recommend figuring out which of your infantry squads you are doing what with. I generally have my platoon lead charges into the main of an enemy force, with armor support. The PCS and the squads in the platoon all have Vox. My Vet squads that I have work independently generally don't, because I don't expect to be giving them many orders. I wish I could give my HWS Vox so I could give them the "Dig in" and "Get back in the Fight" orders easier... but hey. It's no biggie. I would give your commanders Vox, just so they have them. Then give vox to whatever infantry squads you expect to give orders. Getting to reroll a "Get back in the Fight" just before the squad flees off the board edge is gonna be worth those points.
