It is stated in the codex that in order to benefit from rending, the model can't use any special close combat weapons. If you equip a TWC with a thunder hammer, does he have to use the thunder hammer, or does he have an option to use rending?

I am not at home to check the book, but I think it says the model "replaces" his CCW with a Thunder Hammer. So basically he will have to swing with the hammer. If it does not says replaces with then he would keep the CCW and have the option I would think.

The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the iniquities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who would attempt to poison and destroy My brothers. And you will know My name is the Lord when I lay My vengeance upon thee. |

If you have a special CCW, you must make all your attacks with that CCW.

If you have a single special close combat weapon (such as a thunder hammer) you must use it, the only time you could avoid using the thunder hammer is if you had a second special close combat weapon of a different type. That said, Thunderwolf cavalry have the special rule "Rending (close combat only)" and attacking with a Thunder Hammer is most certainly a close combat attack, so as far as I can tell, a Thunderwolf Cavalry model with a Thunder Hammer has rending just like any other model in the unit. Not particularly useful against most targets since you are already S10 and ignoring armour saves, and against vehicles if you roll a 6 to penetrate you have already penetrated anything in the game before the extra D3. Although it is noteworthy for the other items, particularly (IMO) the wolf claws who can re-roll the to-wound dice. Note: Just realised that the Thunderwolf wargear specifically says they only rend when not using special close combat weapons, so I doubt it's RAI, but since the unit "Thunderwolf Cavalry" does not have the wargear "Thunderwolf Mount" this wouldn't apply to them.

Interceptor Drones can disembark at any point during the Sun Shark's move (even though models cannot normally disembark from Zooming Flyers).

Except it states you can only get rending when you don't have a special CCW. TH == special CCW == no rending.
The note (close combat only) is to stop you having rending BP....

As my edit says, I realised this afterwards, but it only says this on the Thunderwolf Mount wargear, which Thunderwolf Cavalry do not have.

Actually, that is a VERY good Point. Seems that Thunderwolf Cav have rending thunderhammers while the Wolf Lord joined to them just bats away like a fish with his. Whether that's the Intent, I suppose we wont ever know. I can see it being that the Cavalry units are ALWAYS with their Thunderwolves, so are more "linked" to them than a Wolf Lord who has to do different things occasionally. Also, I notice that Canis would have his Ranged attacks as rending as well (if he had a gun).

As I said though, not particularly valuable with the Thunder Hammer, I think the place it would be best would be a frost axe, for S6, still get a bonus attack for having 2 CCW, can wound T10 (which S6 normally can't) and if you roll a 6 to pen a tank, you are looking at 13-15, so potentially can pen a Land Raider.

That it does. Well, it's a nice find and I'll be adding it to the 1.4 of my FAQ due Monday. I foresee a lot of BAWWWWWWW about this in the near future.
