Ok so i have a really stupid question but i cannot find an answer in the BRB (i also may not be able to read so...)
When is flames of the phoenix, assuming it has not been dispelled in the opponents magic phase, resolved. Is it at the beggening of my magic phase, so that after it works i can cancel it and then cast as normal, or does it resolve at the end of the phase so that i cannot cast anything and then my opponent can dispel it and then the magic phase is over. Or is it something else entirely?

Not sure of the wording, but it should state when the effect happens in the spell description itself. As I understand, if it doesn't specify when it is resolved other than in the magic phase, then it's up to you as the player in control to decide what order to resolve actions in over the phase. This would mean that you can resolve the existing Flames of the Phoenix, then cast another spell (which can be another instance of Flames of the Phoenix), thereby canceling the original spell, and go about the remainder of your phase.

Beginning of your Magic Phase, so before any spells are cast.

It's at the beginning of the magic phase. if you really want to be mean, cast Flames of the Phoenix, then with another wizard cast Drain Magic. I can't remember off the top of my head, but I thin Flames is an 11+ to cast. add drain magic on top of that and it is a 14+ to dispel

people in my gaming group didn't believe me when I said that's how it works. then I showed them the FAQ. they are a little bitter. now they just make sure they dispel one or the other. Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh, and the 5th edition version of the spell (called Fiery Convocation) was even better as it went off at the beginning of EVERY magic phase, yours and your opponents. Throwing that out with the Total Power card (we used cards back in those days, and Irresistible Force was called Total Power) was just plain awesome!!

flames of the pheonix says it hits every model in the unit, including characters.... does that mean if a unit has a unit champion, it could possibly be picked off?

I was under the impression that it wouldn't target the command models of a unit, it could just cause extra wounds that went to the rank and file like normally?
Heroes are separate in this case, and so can take wounds. .

@citadel - the difference is that the hits aren't "distributed" over the unit as normal shooting. It says that each individual model suffers a hit - in which case you'd make sure to take a separate roll for any characters and unit champ if there is one.
