Rippers being a swarm, cannot hold objectives but I think you are correct in that they can contest them. I just don't like how expensive they are (base cost is as much as a hormagaunt) for not a lot of benefits... they do benefit from +1 to their cover save, and have multiple wounds, but they are vulnerable to blast templates (which are prevalent nowadays) and being a troop choice without being able to do things that troops ought to do (holding objectives, etc). I'd rather take another brood of choppy hormagaunts for the price. Hormagaunts are plenty enough for me, being fleet of foot, and beasts, it gives them up to 12" of movement (depending on your luck at dice rolling) and another 12" of assault range. Most games, that means you can assault on the 2nd turn at latest. That is just as reliable to me as a DS-ing ripper swarm.
