Is it okay that if I am currently playing Ultramarines, I paint some new models a different colour scheme if I use the same rules as the plain Space Marine Codex? For example: Ultramarine-Sons of Orar army or Praetors of Orpheus-Salamanders army.

Yes, so long as you use only one FoC.

Awesome, because some guy at my local hobby shop said it would be illegal.

You might find various people who complain about having a squad painted in Black Templar colors and then another squad painted in Ultramarine colors, for example, but as you're using just the one codex, and the one FoC chart, then your painting scheme between units is just paint.

It's possible that the other guy thought that you wanted to have a squad painted as Ultramarines using the Codex:Space Marines rules, and a squad painted in a different manner using a different codex...

This is why you bring Pillowcases to your LFGS.

To add to the above, you could paint ever model in your army as though it was from a different chapter if you felt like it and it would be perfectly legal as long as you followed the force composition rules in your codex.

That would be a cool looking army, methinks....

There is a passage in the SM dex that pretty much says you can play whatever SM Chapter you want (Excluding BA, BT, DA and SW since they have their own dex.). Show it to the guy that says it was illegal.

How else you think I could field my "Rainbow Chapter"?

Yeah, I think it would awesome to see a SM army with different chapters comprising it. The only rule that I would have is that you had to play from one specific codex and could not combine them, but other than that, anyone who tells you otherwise needs Gwar!'s homemade pillow case attack.

You would tell them that it is a power weapon and they dont get an armor save, although if it came to that I'm sure I would have walked away long before then... lmao

Actually, it's a mix between a Thunder Hammer and a Frost... Bludgeoning-thing

I think I'm going to do that, like some epic force of multiple chapters converging on an awesome battle. Ultramarines, Praetors of Orpheus, and maybe a squad of a custom chapter. That'd be cool.

I might make a company called the Daleks, bringing in my Dr. Who interest.

Again, Pillowcase and Bricks.

My Space Wolves have NEVER been Space Wolves Grey, they have always been Sombre Grey

It demonstrates an effort made to be understood, and to make your post an easy and pleasant read. over at DA WAAAGH! we find a 'Dredd Sock' is actually quite usefull. It involves putting a dredd-naught in a sock and.... well, I think you get the rest.

It's called a Crusade army. Space Marines have often cooperated in the same theater at the same time. Like the Maelstrom Wars against the Tyrant of Badab.

On page 42 of the Space Marines codex there's detailed background info on the Zeist Campaign; when Bro-Ham Sicarius calls in favors from everywhere and assembles an ultra 1337 SPEZ MREEN crusade of everybody.

Just tell anyone that takes beef that your mixed chapter army list is simply the residual elements of that SuperBestFriends battle force on its way back out of the system.

My Space Marine army is a complete Death Watch company. I have 1 tac squad with green shoulder highlights and salamander symbols and 1 with gold shoulder highlights painted blue in the middle with the ultramarines symbol.

Like people have said, you can paint your army rainbow colors and say they're 15 different chapters, just as long as you use the same FOC.
