Hello dakkadakka, ive been ready up on the codex and for my HQ choices i have been selecting the WGBL for a slot, i think they are effective on paper and quite cheap for such a great model. for example, i use a WGBL with a frost axe and the saga of the hunter (and other sagas for different roles obviously) and some cheap equipment to outflank with a 15 size blood claw squad (to offer support/attack and to general suprise the enemy with such a large cheap squad)

now im asking, they look good on paper but how effective are they ingame?

thanks

I have thus far found them to be very similar to how they've always been; somewhat less durable but a good point saving option. I like using them.

Cheap HQ.

That in itself is a selling point of them. GW has recently moved towards crazy expensive HQ's...IMO.

Anything over 150 is too much for me.

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

They're nice ...and quite alot of decent HQ's are 150 or under.....Lash sorcerer, Winged prince, Herald of Kohrne and Khorne Lord are all under 150 (yes i'm a chaos player )

The two most popular Ork HQs choices the PK Warboss and the KFF Big Mek are both under 90 pts. All the named characters are over 150 though.

Imo, the Battle Leader would be hilarious with a unit of Thunderwolves and Saga of the Hunter. Cover them with some Fenrisian Wolves and you'll have +3 cover saves all the way up the field.

Why 3+ cover?
4+ right?

Page 49 of BRB:
"Unless specified in the rule itself..., the unit's special rules are not conferred upon the character, and the character's special rules are not conferred upon the unit."

I don't see Saga of the Hunter affecting the unit he joins. Don't forget, the IC is himself a unit.

But I'm sure other's would disagree with a different angle of RAW.....

I'm under the impression that saga of the hunter effects the IC and the units he joins. Cheap HQ's are always welcome in my books

Just talked to some people about the outflank ability for the saga of the hunter only applies to the WGBL and is lost when he joins a squad.

Folks, Don't forget Saga of the Hunter is a Infantry only. If the WGBL takes a mount, he's calvary, not infantry any more.

I know.... it's funny they say you can't take it with a jump pack or bike, but you can't take it with a Mount either.

. . . Crap you're right . . . walking Bloodclaw squad with Runepriest and Stormcaller?
Stealth explicitly states that the unit gains +1 to cover saves. I don't think the IC forms a unit within a unit.

It doesn't say infantry only. Just says you lose it if you take a bike or jump pack. IIRC, thunderwolf mount can take hunter.

It actually does say "Infantry Only". Its the first sentence under the entry.

It also says "the Character has the ability to outflank and the stealth special rule". Therefore, the abilities do not transfer to units that the IC attaches to.

SW Scouts have the "scout(s)" and "infiltrate" rule, which can be used to outflank.

However, when a unit with the "scout" or "infiltrate" USR (such as SW Scouts) is joined by an IC lacking these USR (such as WGBL with Saga of the Hunter), then the unit loses its special rule and can't outflank.
