my assault squad did an amazing job in a 2v2 game this weekend. it was SM+SM vs Orks+Chaos, in a capture and control mission. the enemy had first turn, and they deployed in a long line along their edge. myself and my ally deployed in an armored spearhead in one corner of the board, (the objectives were both on that side). my assault squad was behind the front wall of rhinos. first round was night fight... nobody got any shots off. My assault squad consisted of 10 marines, 2 flamers, a sarge with a thunder hammer, and a librarian with avenger.

second turn, my assault marines jumped out behind the rhinos, and landed in front of a warboss and his nob squad, along with a squad of 12 boyz. the librarian and assault squad fired flamers at the enemy, and killed 2 nobs, and the entire boyz squad. they then charged in, and beat them in hand to hand. the warboss and his remaining nob fled in terror off the board. my squad lost 4 marines in this glorious charge. they then took refuge in the bunker the nobs were in.

the next turn, the assault marines jumped across the table again, and smacked into a 24 man squad of shoota boyz, though this time they had heavy support from terminators. still, the assault marines killed 13 with flamer fire before charging in, and personally killed the warphead leading the squad, scattering them to the wind.

the NEXT turn, the assault squad jumped over, and vaporized a squad of noise marines. I lost another 2 marines in this charge, but the full squad of noise marines was annihilated.

on their final move of the game, they moved over to flame another squad of noise marines, this one had a slaaneshi lord. They murdered all but 2 noise marines and the lord with flamers and avenger fire. the lord killed all my assault marines except the sergeant, who then finished the lord with his thunder hammer. In the end, sarge and the librarian were all that survived. but for 4 turns, they were the spearhead that drove into and tore out the heart of my enemies. 3HQ's (warboss, warphead, lord), as well as 4 troops (nobz, 2x noise marines, and shoota boyz) fell to them. They were this games MVP's, by far. the other units I had drew more fire, but none did more damage.

I just find it odd that a unit most people I talk to say is rubbish (they don't like assault marines) consistently does so damn well for me. They are my MVP in every game I use them in....

in a local tournament, we played a reverse dawn of war game. You had to deploy 2 heavies, fast attack, or elites units at the start of the game. the objective was to kill your opponents originally deployed units. of course, I nominated my assault marines and assault terminators as my designated units... my opponent nominated 2 squads of broadsides. my assault marines deployed as close as they could to the front line... but were a ways back. they waited until my librarian could join them on the first turn (dawn of war style)... before they moved. they jumped forwards, and for 2 turns as they jumped from cover to cover, getting closer to a unit of broadsides, they were pounded on by the entire tau army. eventually, just my sergeant, a single marine, and the librarian made it to the broadsides... but they still killed them all. they died the next turn... but again, not without taking significant enemy fire. during this time, the rest of my army moved into position, and I then heroically slaughtered the tau.

Or in another game, where the assault marines engaged and destroyed a grey knights grandmaster + his retinue.... my sarge's thunder hammer and librarian's null zone + power sword made short work of the grandmaster and his retinue. of course I lost over half my squad in the battle... but it was glorious.

Rubbish? Really? My brother LOVES assault marines. The couple times Ive played as SM, Ive used them, with 2 flamers and a thunder hammer as well (weird eh?) and they POUNDED the enemy. I took out a whole scout squad in one turn with that set up. 2 flamers in that squad is just serious ass kickery. I make sure that there is a flamer on either end of the squad. That way you can basically criss cross the templates into the enemy squad. Its just devastating.
I think assault marines are the tits.
