I was having trouble new BRB. I emailed "ask your question" about strength of attacker in assault.
"In assault combat is the melta gun’s strenght or the battle sister’s strength, used to calculate the wounds.
Same for Krak and plasma grenades ?
In assault you use the Battle Sister’s strength. If you have Frag or Krak grenades you can use those instead of the Battle Sister’s strength." The reply is from GW.
Is this correct? I can see where krak grenades would be usefull. I thought they Suck VS. vehicles. I know rules can be a hot subject. Answers with more than "NO" would be appreciated. Thank you, for your input.
If true I would expect to see more Krak Head figures .
AND Should us gamers ask the Dakka posters instead of asking GW.

Guns are never used in combat - so theyre right on that.
However you may use Grenades against vehicles ONLY - in which case they follow the rules for grenades (see the rulebook) i.e. different strength, etc =- and you only ever get to make a single attack, instead of the attacks on your profile+bonuses

Sure, but be aware that you can get two completely different and conflicting answers here, and have both people tell you theirs is the only right answer.
Getting outsiders opinions is good, but you can't take anything any poster says on this (or any forum) as gospel. Nobody here has any greater authority on rules than anyone else, including you.

The BGB is quite clear. Grenades can only be used against vehicles, and guns are never used in combat (Unless you're Cypher-but WD has printed rules for that).

To answer your specific question, the answer you got is correct that you use the sisters strength in assault, not the melta gun.
If you are fighting a valid target for a grenade in close combat (such as a vehicle), the strength of the krak grenade is used. That answer looks correct, but it could have been answered with a little bit more detail for clarity.

In Joh's defense, he probably assumed you knew that grenades can only be used against vehicles.
(you did know that, right?).
Given that assumption, it looks to me like the answer is entirely correct.
And yes, it's frequently easier and quicker to ask here, and the answer probably carries just as much weight.

If you do get a person who thinks a gun's strength can be use in melee, they are probably thinking of 2nd edition, where if I recall one used the Str of a pistol in melee. That is at least the case in Necromunda, which is based off the same rules.
Just something to keep in mind.
