So just curious. When an IC and unit are in a transport... can you disembark the IC on the side... for example. And then the unit from the front and then they end their move away from 2" of each other and therefore separate? I have always played that this is possible, but just wondering if there are different views on this.

Yup. It's specifically allowed in the "Disembarking" rules section on page 67.
