I need help painting white on a few of my new which hunters. My base coat is primed Chaos Black and then I use skull white but it seems i have to use many different coats, and sometimes it eventually gets bloachy and the full white effect doesn't show. Any tips ? thanks!

I use black undercoat, the way I do white is mix abit of black in with the white [almost a light grey] and water it down, do 3 thin coats and then try a straight white coat over the top.

What is the best way to shade White, the only thing that works for me is Flat white Followed by a Gloss White, but that does not always work.

Thanks, but does using a grey like fortress grey or something like that also work before you paint the white over it ?

If you do a full painting with fortress grey and then dry-brush white onto it, you should have a very nice shading effect that looks very nice.

You'll have to build it from brown like Deffskullz said. You could also use grays to white.
Next time use white primer.

Yea, thanks, I think il try the brown then grey and then white.. the only problem I have with using white primer is that it gets into the crevases and cracks and detail doesn't stand out as well..

I got black, codex grey, astronomicon grey, white - takes a few layers of white to get it smooth.

Black - 2x Dheneb Stone - Lowlight with Badab Black

Ignore Skull white, it never sets smooth

Helps if you can paint better than me, but see below

I second the recommendation to start with a toned basecoat in either brown or gray NOT BOTH!

I've had great results using Astronomicon Grey to Fortress Gray to Skull White, using Badab Black as a wash after the basecoat.

I've also gotten a nice warm white color using Deneb Stone, washing with Gryphonne Sepia, then using Kommando Khaki, several layers of Bleached Bone, and finally Bleached Bone and Skull White mixed.

Depends on whether you want a "pure" or cool white or an "off" or warm white...

I go overboard with my white build:

Black undercoat => scorched brown => dark flesh => graveyard earth => commando khaki => bleached bone => skull white

sometimes I skip the bleached bone, other times the khaki. And for yellows, I put my yellow on top of the skull white!

with my cadians i just do a black undercoat then i get skull white and water down in the water pot, then you brush away excess watered white. this will give you very thin coats of white, just build it up untill your plesed with the result.

With my standard black primer i use ice blue and then go with white right on top, makes it easy and crisp.

You may use anything I post, just remember to give me credit if used somewhere else.

+1 creates a very brilliant white

As if on cue, you hear two people singing from the stairwell, and the door is opened and a pair of very smelly, very dirty guardsmen stumble in, completely drunk, and covered in vomit, and immediately collapse unconsious on the porch. You drag them to their beds, realising that they will not be waking up for some time.

I don't have that problem with white primer, just keep working with it.
