If I wanted to start Hordes by buying the basic rulebook, which book would that be? Primal, Evolution, or Metamorphosis?
Thanks for your consideration!

Primal is the first book, but hold tight. They're updating editions and we'll get a sneak
peek at the Hordes rulebook during the Field Test in November.
Warmachine MK2 updates in January, and we'll see how long it will take Privateer Press to
collate data from the Field Test (which is open to all registered players, by the way) for Hordes.
The basic ruleset is the same for both Hordes and Warmachine. However, the
main difference will be the rules for Focus and Fury.

It kind of depends on how much hobby money you have.
If you are flush with cash, go ahead and get Hordes: Primal.
Otherwise, wait until November, like Malf says, and download the Field Test rules for free.
Personally, after I get the models I want for my Cryx, and a Nomad and Mule for my Privateers, I want to collect all the WM and Hordes books just to have the collection.
Maybe trawl eBay. You might find the books for cheap.

Wait a month and download the MKII beta rules for free.
You could buy a Battlebox for the faction you like. You can play thet straight out of the box with the starter rules that come with it.

agreed!
taken from the privatterpress website:
After nearly a year of restless anticipation, Privateer Press is proud to announce that the HORDES Mk II Field Test will open on November 24th.
The HORDES Mk II field test documents will be available for download from the HORDES Mk II field test site at http://fieldtest.privateerpress.com. Players will need to register on the site in order to provide feedback and download the HORDES field test documents. Registration will open with the release of the HORDES Mk II field test documents at 10:00 am PST, November 24th. Note that players who register for the WARMACHINE Field Test will need to re-register to partake in the HORDES Mk II Field Test.
Following the conclusion of the HORDES Field Test, Privateer Press will release an amended field test document online on January 2, 2010. This document will be adopted as official for all Privateer Press organized play events that include HORDES. The amended document will not be the final version of the rules, but will include some changes made from field test feedback to provide HORDES players with the best rule set possible until HORDES Primal Mk II officially releases in summer 2010.
as you can see Hordes MKII will be a book in summer, with an amended copy coming at the begining of january and the field test available on the 24th november.
so if you want my advice, choose an army, buy a battlebox, buy some extra units, paint them if novemeber 24th hasnt come by then just buy some more of what you like( because you cant go wrong with buying models you like). i dont get why you tell him (or her) to get a book if they're 'flush with cash' as you put it theres no point the OP (or TC if you want) might aswell wait till MKII is out for field testing.

Because the fluff and art in the books kick ass.
Maybe I am an odd person, but I collected all the Rogue Trader 40k books, even though I got in the game about a month before 40k 2nd ed came out.
Knowing where the rules started, and where the story began is something I find worth knowing.
I don't get into games just for the rules. There has to be that "something" to catch my interest, otherwise the quality of the rules doesn't matter to me.
I find Warmachine and 40k have these things.
