Hello Dakka,

I am looking for feedback on an IG Praetorian list that I am building. I am not looking to win any tournaments with this list, but I would like to be able to play at the LGS and have a decent chance of winning. The only problem is when it comes to trooper models I am limited to the models from the Praetorian range of figures. So that means most plasma options are out. I am hoping to supplement this limitation with the newer HQ and vehicle options. This is my first serious attempt at making an army for 40k, so I am sure there are things in here that aren't optimum.

The basic idea I had for this list was that the HQ and blob platoon would form the center of the army, while the tank squadrons and Vendetta would nip at the flanks of the opposing army. The 30 troopers would be the primary anti-infantry elements with support from the six heavy bolter teams. The six lascannon teams would pair up with the vehicles to knock out any large targets, while the Vendetta deployed Veterans would use their meltas to hunt the really big threats. Is that a sound battle plan?

HQ: 247
Company Command (Bolt Pistol, Medic, Vox, Standard, Flamer, Carapace Armor, 3 Advisers, 2 Body Guards)

Troops:

Platoon 1: 927
Command Squad (melta bombs, powerweapon, Medic, Standard, Vox, Grenade Launcher)
Squad 1 (Bolt Pistol, Commissar, Vox,) 30 troopers
Heavy Weapons Squad (3 Lascannons)
Heavy Weapons Squad (3 Lascannons)
Heavy Weapons Squad (3 Heavy Bolters)
Heavy Weapons Squad (3 Heavy Bolters)
Special Weapons Squad (3 Meltas)
Chimera (dedicated transport)

Platoon 2: 170
Veteran Squad (Power weapon, 3 Meltas, Grenadiers, Demolitions, riding in Vendetta)

Fast Attack:

Vendetta Attack Ship: 130 (Veteran Squad transport)

Bane Wolf: (Dozer, Xtra Armor, Multi-melta) 170

Heavy Support:

Tank Squadron 1: 235
Demolisher (Dozer, Xtra Armor, Multi-meltas, Lascannon)

Tank Squadron 2: 280
Executioner (Dozer, Xtra Armor, Pintle Gun, Multi-meltas, Lascannon)

Total: 2004

First of all, I'm not sure how well those heavy weapons teams are going to last, since you don't have enough infantry to screen them, and if you're anything like me then you don't play with quite enough cover in your deployment zone to shield all the squads. But it is a lot of firepower, especially if you get your orders off. I would personally advise a couple less HWSs, more infantry.

I think you could fit a lot more into this list by cutting upgrades (I'm always saying this, and it might be a bit of a personal mania, but bear with me). You've got 86 men, 3 medium and 2 heavy vehicles, which isn't bad, but not really that resilient at 2000 points, especially since the HWSs will die double fast against S6 weapons.

Extra armour and dozer blades are totally marginal upgrades in my opinion. Those aren't transports but shooting vehicles, keep them cheap, if they can't shoot they're no good in my view. By fielding an executioner with plasma sponsons and a demolisher with melta sponsons, you could save 90 points on the upgraded monstrosities you have now. The upgrades may look good individually, but you're paying a lot for tanks that aren't really any tougher. Likewise, the banewolf only needs a multimelta, which I think is a terrific upgrade.

Veterans don't really need a power sword or carapace armour. One, they just need to blast something as they disembark to fulfill their purpose, and two, the extra save and negligible combat upgrade are not going to save them from real firepower or assaults.

As far as the infantry platoon goes, please give them some guns! Autocannons would be so useful here. Your CCS has a much better chance to use a BID order on these squads than it does on a HWS, so give them some firepower.

As for the command squads, I personally favour 3 cheap special weapons and a vox. 70 and 50 points respectively, shoots things, gets the orders through. A full CCS with carapace and FNP is the closest the IG have to a tough squad, but is it worth the points? You could get another tank! I suggest stripping down these squads and using the points on GUNS! (you may be seeing a pattern here)

In summary, strip everything down and get more bodies, hulls and guns is my advice. Sorry if I come off as pushy in giving it, good luck!

Eldar Corsairs: 4000 pts
Imperial Guard: 4000 pts

Corregidor 700 pts
Acontecimento 400 pts

Thanks for the feedback!

I will rework the list and take a second look at Autocannons. On paper they really didn't impress me. Thanks again for the insights, I am going to give my list another go.
