Hi Guys ... got into an argument with my mate on re-rolling with Wolf Claws the other night;

Seems to me, re-rolling at the point of having the most dice (to hit) ensures most mostly likely number of wounds [on say an MEQ].

He insists re-rolling wounds is the way to go because ... well, he can't give a reason!

So what do we think...

Wolf guard on Charge with two Wolf Claws

4 attacks, hits MEQ on 4+, wounds on 4+:

Average roll 2 hit, 2 miss. Reroll to hit, 1 more hit.

Average roll, 1.5 wounds.

OR

Average roll 2 hit, 2 miss

Average roll 1 wound, reroll .5 wound.

So it's the same either way.

-------------------------------------------

If you have a Wolf Lord with 6 attacks on charge, hitting on 3+, wounding on 4+:

Average roll, 4 hits, 2 miss, reroll to hit, 1.3 hit.

Average roll, 2.6 wounds

OR

Average roll 4 hits, 2 miss

Average roll 2 wounds, reroll 3 wounds.
---------------------------------------------------

So sounds like the place to concentrate is on the "harder" roll. Otherwise, it doesn't matter mathematically.

Always reroll which ever target number is larger. If you need 3s to hit and 4s to wound, reroll the 4s needed to wound. If you need 4s to hit and 3s to wound, reroll the 4s on the to hit roll.

Or if you have them on a character with an appropriate saga, then obviously just re-roll the part that isn't helped by the saga.

Agreed, reroll the more difficult roll. Quiite often there won't be a difference (especially against MEqs), but there are quite a few oponents that do have unusually high/low WS or toughness.

Against MEQs (4+ and 4+), I would re-roll the to-hits. While it doesn't matter statistically, those extra hits could turn into extra wounds. But, if it's not an MEQ, go with the larger number. If you're fighting plague marines, re-roll the to-wound. If you're fighting Eldar aspect warriors, re-roll the to hit.
