The gaming table from GW is very nice to play on, but the trouble it has is that put full of skulls makes the table suitable to represent a Khornate Daemon World and nothing else.

I was hired to paint up a table and some terrain, and especially to get rid of the skulls and make it look natural:

I wrote more about it in a blog entry.

Hadn't thought of something as simple as extending the 'cracked ground' look to cover the skulls. Well done, it really does look less cheesy than lotsaskulls. I was surprised to see you used greenstuff though - I'd have thought carefully cut bits of plasticard would be simpler?

I love the broken Rhino.

Grey stuff is Milliput or something similar?

It seems sensible to fill the skull pits with bulk putty and use plastic card for the slabs on top, with a minor bit of putty or something to stop them being completely flat.

But, but, it's 40K, which is just not complete without skulls.

Skulls are fine for wearing apparel but not landscaping.

That satyr also works well as a minotaur blood bowl player.

I really think that adding plastic card on top and then smoothing that over with the green/grey stuff would be more work, and more difficult and complicated than simply using grey stuff to fill the gaps and sculpting it to look like broken earth.

Grey stuff works really well for it. It takes the hard edge and keeps it nice.

If you'd like to try the same thing, the best way to make it look natural is to try and extend the parts of the earth around the skulls first, and afterward sculpt new bits of broken earth.

The Crashed Rhino is from the Battlescape terrain piece. It's a REALLY beautiful item. We have one at our FLGS that I almost bought and it's far better than that vaccu-formed Blastscape crap. If you need a good WWI looking piece of terrain, grab it.

I like the cracks as well, and it's an easy way to cover up those corny skull pools. Visually appealing and suitably themed solution.

I'll second that. The crashed rhino is a beautiful piece of terrain.

The rhino looks perfect among the cracked drylooking terrain. I also know what you mean by the skulls i think there should be corpses dotted around to show that there has been fighting on the board not ons of skulls. Like i said amazing board i would love to play on it.

I bet you could make that rhino fit into more types of scenery than just the cracked earth, but I think it is a little predisposed to cracked earth type terrain.

I see you're not familiar with the theory of Plate Skulltonics.
