I know IG is almost a pure shooty army and getting close means getting raped, but I feel I should have SOME backup CC in my guard army. I don't want to use Orgyns because they look ugly and sub-humans ugh, but I don't see any other choices?
Rough Riders?

Straken or an allied unit of Grey Knight Terminators are both excellent choices.
Rough Riders and Ogryn are opposite sides of the same issue - both are overpriced. One isn't tough enough, the other isn't killy enough. You can probably figure out which one is which.

Agreed, go with allied terminators if you want CC.
I'll argue with the statement on rough riders though - they might not be great against infantry, but give them melta guns/bombs and they're a great fast tank-killer.

But if your CC "specialists" still melt when faced with something that actually fights back, why would you bother taking them in the first place? Your shooty element fills that niche just fine.

no need to give them anything except what they have...I field 1 or 2 units of them, and I love em...and they usually do very well for me...people tend to underestimate the range of RR...with their fleet as well as cavalry rules, they can catch opponents by surprise...
Putting them in reserve is a good tactic versus an assault army, so you know where they are and come in accordingly, and they won't be the initial target of shooting since the enemy will know they can be a real threat to neutralize any heavy infantry they have...
against other shooty armies (ie tau) I deploy them behind my chimera wall..if the tau shoots them, that means they are not shooting at your other units...so that's fine with me...in my last game versus tau 1 unit reached his lines whole and finished off a crisis suit squad which was whittled down by my shooting...
If they survive after the turn after they assault, their krak grenades make them a decent tank hunting unit...there are times however where there is nothing with a toughness value of worth to assault, so I send them tank hunting (2 attacks of strength 5 each versus a stationary or combat speed moving vehicle with an av10 rear armor will give you results, although half the RR may die in the resulting exposion)...

Creed does give the squad the furious charge +1 st +1 ini.
Kind of useful.
Although Straken is another is it straken I cant remember gives it as well.
I can't remember what else do priests do other than a reroll?
Oh and MELTABOMBS for the Sgt. Actually useful against walkers and annoying. You need a 6 to hit but with 5 sgts and 5 chances you may get one.

Rough riders can't take melta bombs (there is an article up which shows how scary melta bombing riders can be, but it was written for the previous codex) and when it comes to melta gunning they aren't as good as a walking platoon command squad, company command squad, special weapon squad or vet squad.
Well, one melta bomb on the sergeant. Not exactly the most reliable antitank in the universe.

I find PAGK to be useful, depending on the opponent.
Good counter-charge, resilient (compared to your Guardsmen), and they're scoring.
Be careful with them though, they're really expensive and they'll die just like Tactical Marines.
However, I've introduced several units to them after my Guard have shot them up and they've simply floored everyone they've come across.

For 105 you get 10 counter assault monsters with rough rides. They don't hold up well in following turns but who cares there only there to wipe up wats left coming at u

ditto...BUT I always stress that them being armed with krak grenades makes them have a secondary role as a tank hunter. I have taken many an unwary vehicle due to this....

While I agree that ogryns are overpriced and not killy enough I think that rough riders are a great value. The biggest reason you don't see a lot of RRs on tabletops is simply because their models suck and they compete for fast attack slots with a lot of other great stuff.
I built my RRs out of empire outriders. They are much cheaper and a million times better looking than the crappy ghengis khan reject models out now.

That is absolutely right..if there would be release of plastic RR with options on what mount to use instead of horses.you would be seeing more of them.

I really like Penal legion knife fighters, cheap decent CC, only problem is you only have a 1/3 chance of getting them for every squad you field

Armored Sentinels. A unit of 3 are the best tarpit units in IG next to ogryns (although ld7 isnt that great. if they lose combat they can be swept)

The blob squad with yarrick and creed or strakken is murderous.
I want to say one thing in favor of Ogryns, I take them for gaks and giggles, but every time I use them, they perform fantastically.
They rape Orks. If you get the charge off, they shoot, then charge and just punk the little greenskins. I had a squad with a commissar lord attached and they ran through three mobs.
They held up a termy assault squad for three turns with two characters attached.
Super competitive? No, but good enough to use in fun games and have nice results out of them.

I like using my platoon command squads as a close combat units in a worst case scenario. The only problem is how fast they die. While its definatly not worth the points in terms of performance, however, they do get those extra few kills to hold a unit off until some more of your guns become available. Wait until the enemy are in charging distance of less than 1' then move forward, open fire with pistols (plasma work well here) then charge with pweps or pfists. The best way to do this is to combined the unit with an infantry squad though to give it some more bodies. Like I say its expensive but it frees your fast attack and elite slots. The important thing here isn't to make back your points in combat, but hold off an attack so that your heavy guns can earn them back instead.
Ogryns on the otherhand. Expensive but they hold down combats well. You expect them to last but getting kills isn't their strong point.

Statistically, you will almost certainly die when assaulting a well-maintained fortress with a competent commander. You must strive to make your death useful.
Your foe is well equipped, well-trained, battle-hardened. He believes his gods are on his side. Let him believe what he will. We have the tanks on ours.

Ya I had some DKOK rough riders then I was like uhg these expensive lol. But they are definatly RLY GOOD. If you add the special character for 50 points you double the amount of wounds they can do.

You're right that with the troop character the combat effectiveness of the RR goes up.
But what do you do with the problem I see with his special rule, which forces the unit to charge the nearest enemy in range, you cannot control what they attack.
