Hey all!

I recently got a SM army from my friend, on the condition that I buy him sum IG stuff before Xmas. So Ive decided to go for Crimson Fists.

I originally was going to go for Ultramarines, but when I base coated them (nice and Dark to build up from), with Mordain Blue, washed over with Badab Black; it inspired me suddenly to go for Crimson Fist's. So I bought Pedro Kantor and off I went!

I would rather have started with a Black undercoat for CF, to give the crevasses that definitive blackness, but It is probably much quicker the way I've accidentally gone about it, and they should turn out fairly well with just the black wash for deepness.

The next stage is to go over the main colour lightly (leaving the crevasses), with regal blue.

Then to build up the crimson parts from Mechrite Red, scab red, and highlights of a lightened (bad moon yellow) red gore.

Then the highlights over the blue with ultramarine, and finally a mix of ultramarine and white (not pure white even at the end cuz it takes away from the army's colour).

Then finer detail. (I intend to do Kantor's Laurel's green as opposed to silver).

The bases will be built up a bit before the highlighting starts, and will become a dark brown/rocky/snow style.

Here is the beginings of the first stage: Undercoat - Mordain - Badab

(looks really cak cuz of the pics and cuz theres nothing to see apart from what there is to paint)

Also.... The combat squad will become a full tactical squad.

P.s. Tried to do the whole image thing but its nearly half 4 in the morning so I'll do it this way for now!

Any sugestions as to how you think my layer choices and this accidental starting colour will work?

several layers of ink should darken itup nicely then highlight with that color. Or if that isnt your think strip and reprime black will creat a darker undertone for you starting.

Didnt think of adding a second coat of black actually.. Probably because I wasnt intending on doing them CF until I saw how the first stage for my Ultramarines turned out, then I thought, 'I could just do this and touch it up and it'l all be done'. But I want to spend more time on them now I think.

Might add more ink in the essential places and then paint the main colour of regal blue over that, rather than trying to get out of the regal blue layer altogether!

Finally got something new done!!!

Well, nearly everything is at that stage of blue, washed with black. But I got this nearly done today, (well its now nearly 4am where I am). But must retire for the night.

Still WIP Got to finish the base obv, write Kantor on the label thing, touch up the blue in the lover leg areas, and the odd little other thing here and there. The base will be dry brushed with 2 lighter layers, then flocked with snow effect.



So pleased with this so far, but its not finnished so comments welcome!

A nice job so far with Kantor, he looks good on the Base.

Looks really good ! Really detailed and all, cool stuff.
Now i don't know if using the flash makes it look that way, but the red parts (especially the powerfist) look kinda... pink ? The red on Crimson Fists is usually really dark and blood-like. But again, it's probably the picture, not the paintjob.

I painted up the AoBR figures for Gamers Haven's Learn-to-Play Armies and I painted the Marines as Crimson Fists. In order to get the dark red that Deammer mentioned above I used Reapers "Crimson Red" as it has the dark deep color that gives you the red you need for the Crimson Fists.

Yes, the red was a bit lobster coloured, but Ive fixed that a bit now. Tho it probably could be more red still. Its all finished anyway, Im not altering it anymore for the time being, but I may go over the red at sum stage If I need to and find an easy way to do it. Maybe just a wash and highlight. (sounds like a trip to the hair dresser! lol)

Dont have a digi cam here at the moment, but there will be a 12mp camera about this weekend, and ill get a photo of it with no flash in broad daylight (or as close to daylight as we get here).

Going to buy some modeling snow tomorrow when our GW re-opens after refurbishment.

Anyone who paints from white is a brave man in my opinion, I hate white, I just cant seem to work with it well.

As for your Kantor, hes looking good. It will be interesting to see the completed model.

I really like the old school chapters from 1st edition and the Crimson Fists is quite possibly one of my favourites. I will follow your blog with interest.

Really ? I paint from white aswell but had been a pure black primer since 2007 , and started using white primer and i think it works wayyy better

fistacular! I personally prefer black primer, but then I like my models to be a bit darker.

Yea, I normally use black, but the models were all built and sprayed white when I got them from my friend.
Was originally intending to paint them ultramarines, but ended up going Crimson Fist.

It explains in more detail at the top there I think.

Finally, full-on getting the ball rolling!

Theres been a little tournament at our LGS and its encouraged me to get stuff painted.

I found my scout heavy bolter under my bed! So Im now excited to use the scouts, as I realized from the last few scenario missions I played that more troops are needed for capturing positions, and my little combat squad is at present being turned into a sternguard squad.

I will post images in a few hours, in which everything in the whole army should have all blue base coat and black wash, red parts with wash, first few layers of flesh, possibly some weapons, and more. Plus Kantor is completely finished now!

Its so satisfying and refreshing to actually get stuff painted.

They look really good. Pity I cant just get them now, cuz I want to make my Stern guard without paying 20 bloomin pounds!

Dont think I'll use the bits for basic troops cuz I hate metal models, but I'll definately use them for special models, and eventually my Stern guard as I want at least a full squad of 10.

Something new to post!

Kantor is now finished, and I have found out how to take moderately decent pictures.

I now have the whole army painted blue and washed black. Everything bar the Dread's, Dev's, and tactical squad have Crimson Fists! And Im making progress on the Terminators and Scouts. My home made Sternguard squad is nearly done, sergeant is finished!

All normal troop or general units will have silver cresting. As you can see, the HQ or Elites will have gold cresting. Also, the Stern Guard are going to have 2 red fists rather than just the left, just to identify them as superior!

I was wanting to do something with the power weapons. Dyu reckon just the normal blue electro haze would look naf?

I'll get more up soon as its done!

The only WIP models that I could use some advice on at the moment is the Terminators.

What do you think, should I do the helmets white or not? Its a bit hard to know with Crimson Fist's, but I think it might make them stand out a bit more.



This has just been painted blue, fist painted red (foundation paints), then a washed in black. It still has to have its ultramarine, and blood red/red gore highlights.

Ive decided to do the weapons black with some silver bits.

Impressive job on Kantor As for the terminators id say keep away from white helmets, they'd look too much like ultramarines, and dont forget to give them 2 red fists as they are veterans

Sternguard veteran squad should be done If I get my act together. Well, there just marine models, but I'm dickeying them up, cuz A. Im not paying 40 quid for a veteran squad, B. I want 10 different models, and C. I hate metal models, they loose!
