Hi Folks

Im running out of blades for my games workshop saw (the one that takes the fine blades) and have realised that GW in the uk no longer sell the saw or its blades (Grrr so annoying) as they now sell their razor-saw instead.

Anyway, my GW saw looks very very much like a jewelers saw which is probably what it was based upon. I can get jewelers saw blades from ebay but they are a good number of different sizes.

Does anyone with any experience know which standard jewellers saw blade size is the closest to the standard one that games workshop uk used to sell please?

Thanks for any help

Bob

Cant give advice on the older style saw, but I am a very big fan of the newer GW saw, it is very easy to use and a lot smoother at cutting than the jewelers style saw that I used to use. If you cant find any replacement blades I wouldnt be afraid of trying out the new GW saw.

Both saws are good.

The GW saw is a 'back saw' meaning it has a stiff spine which prevents it curving when you cut. That can be useful.

The jeweller's saw can get into tight places where you wouldn't be able to put the GW blade. You can even drill a hole, thread a blade through it, then cut from the inside of a model outwards.

The blades I use are Winner 1/0 and 3/0 'piercing saw' blades. There isn't much between them in size, either works fine for modelling. There you go...

Here's technical data about piercing saw blades.

It know a bit about jewelers saw's but you would have to tell me what size the one you have is. It should be on the bottom of the handle that's were the size is for most blades. I will come back to this thread if you find out. I am on a lot. Bubber site looks helpful as well you should take a look at it if you have not.

You can do amazing piercework with a jeweler's saw, but I prefer a razor saw for mini work. I have both and I haven't had a need to use the jeweler's saw, yet. For mini work, pretty much any blade size will do you well enough, with the larger sizes being sturdier. Blade size becomes more important when doing work on thin gauge metal, when the teeth per inch is more a determining factor (want 2-3 teeth per thickness of metal for smooth cuts without binding) than the width and depth of the blade (which would determine turning radius and width of kerf), since the differences are minuscule.

Thanks so much for all the fantastic advice.

I will have a look at the saw in my box and check if it has a size. Then plan on ordering some blades and will try the 1/0 first.

Thanks to everyone so much

Cheers
