Ok heres the situation i had in a game the other day and want to get it cleared up before an upcoming tournment. My oppent had a squad of chaos raptors lined out in a string with appox. 1.5 inches in between each one. I charged one side with a squad of emperors childern and the other side with a squad of palgue marines.

X=Raptor
0=Plaguer
@=Emperors child

When the emperors childern attacked he removed the causualties from the three models on the far left, leaving the plaguers no longer in base to base contact. His conculsion was they no longer got to attack. My opion is that since its all one unit and they where in in base to base contact when combat started they would still get to attack at there iniative.
Which was is correct....
Thanx

I had the same thing happen to me. We just moved the models in CC to be in base to base contact with eachother, and continued combat as normal. You still get all of your attacks either way, because the unit isnt dead. But thats my 2 cents.

a situation like this shouldnt happen, at least the way you diagrammed it, which assault did you move in first? after that one, he would have to move the raptosr 6 inches to get most into B2B with whichever you moved in first, then you get to assault with the second unit, which he would then have to move any unengaged models 6" to get into B2B with the second unit.

but i dont have an answer to your query, just pointing out either a diagramming problem, or a slight mistake that would make your assault more effective as you would have more guys in b2b.

It doesn't matter. Models that are in BTB with an enemy unit will strike that unit, regardless if they are still in BTB when their Initiative Step arrives.

Your friend is stuck in 4th ed.

In a multiple combat you determine WHO will fight at the start, before resolving any attacks.

This means you still get to fight even if you now appear unengaged: "zone" sniping is gone in 5th.

The only thing that now stops you fighting is being dead when your I step comes around!

Note that the only way to keep an eligible model (pg. 35) from attacking is to kill it. In the above scenario your models will get to swing on their initiative.

This is incorrect, Defenders React moves are not made until all assault moves (across the board) have been made.

Lordhat has it right, except (IMO) for his last parenthetical clause.

When I assault a given unit, I move all the models assaulting said unit before moving the defenders (as the rulebook instructs), but I do the "defenders react" moves before moving on to move assaulting models elsewhere on the board. I don't think there is any real difference between resolving it this way as opposed to as Lordhat describes, but I think it's quicker, and reduces the chance of forgetting one.
