The case in question is this. I play High Elves, however I think my core troops: Spearmen look crappy.

While LotR is a crappy game that is going to expire as soon as the license runs out, their models esp. their elves rock. I want to use these guys as my spearmen.

However, I do still want to compete in GW tournaments and play at their stores. Will doing so be illegal? and will it be unacceptable at any semi-formal and formal tournaments like the GT?

useless input here ("bump"): Fantastic idea. While I used to think 6th edition spearmen, at least, looked really cool, I can't see why this would be a problem if you based them correctly, made it very clear to everyone what they are, and only did it for the spearmen. If no one gives you a good answer, I suggest asking a redshirt or three, to be sure.

Note that LoTR models are a bit smaller than WFB miniatures. I heard players are not allowed to mix LoTR stuff with WFB stuff in official settings (GT's)... could be wrong, but I think it's very likely that's the case.

I checked the height of these LotR elves to my spearmen and they are almost exactly the same. Spearmen have fatter hands but thats about it.
