Greetings folks!
I am a new player to 40k, but have played CBT for many years. I am looking to build two armies, Space Marines and Orks. The first list I wanted feedback on is as follows:
HQ: Space Marine Chaplain (1#, 130 pts)
1 Space Marine Chaplain @ 130 pts (...in Power Armour)
1 ...in Power Armour (Frag Grenades; Krak Grenades; Power Armour; Rosarius; Jump Pack; Crozius Arcanum; Combi-Meltagun)
Troops: Tactical Squad (11#, 220 pts)
9 Tactical Squad @ 220 pts (Frag Grenades; Krak Grenades; Power Armour; Bolt Pistol x9; Bolter x7; Flamer; Missile Launcher; Rhino)
1 Sergeant (Frag Grenades; Krak Grenades; Bolter; Power Weapon)
1 Rhino (Searchlight; Smoke Launchers; Storm Bolter)
Troops: Tactical Squad (11#, 220 pts)
9 Tactical Squad @ 220 pts (Frag Grenades; Krak Grenades; Power Armour; Bolt Pistol x9; Bolter x7; Flamer; Missile Launcher; Rhino)
1 Sergeant (Frag Grenades; Krak Grenades; Bolter; Power Weapon)
1 Rhino (Searchlight; Smoke Launchers; Storm Bolter)
Fast Attack: Assault Squad (10#, 250 pts)
9 Assault Squad @ 250 pts (Frag Grenades; Krak Grenades; Jump Pack; Power Armour; Bolt Pistol x7; Chainsword x9; Plasma Pistol; Plasma Pistol)
1 Sergeant (Frag Grenades; Krak Grenades; Jump Pack; Power Armour; Plasma Pistol; Power Weapon)
Heavy Support: Predator (1#, 180 pts)
1 Predator @ 180 pts (Searchlight; Smoke Launchers; Extra Armor; Twin Linked Lascannon; Lascannon (each side))
Total Roster Cost: 1000
I'm looking for a mostly balanced force with a slight nudge on the side of aggressive. At this point, I've yet to actually play a game. I'm still painting my models. Please include explination with recommendations. I'm sure you folks have insights into the game I have yet to realize.
Thanks!

Overall, the list looks decent, but some of your upgrades are a bit strange.
Extra armor is probably an unnecessary upgrade for a Predator tank, and the lascannon turret is overpriced. I'd go with a basic combi-pred (AC/LC) with no other upgrades.
Plasma pistols are also generally not that good, especially on expensive and important Sergeants who have a chance of committing suicide. I also don't know why you gave your Chaplain a combi-melta, as these are overpriced for Chaplains and weaken them in CC.
The Tactical Sergeants are also strangely outfitted. I personally don't like giving Tactical Sergeants melee weapons at all-- if you do give them such weapons, though, you want to take either a bolt pistol and power sword or a bolter and power fist. Taking a bolter and power sword loses you a special CC attack in exchange for one extra normal shot on turns in which you don't charge-- not worth it!

List looks pretty good overall. Plasma pistols likely won't do much for you and the chance to harm yourself isn't worth it (especially since you'll probably spend most of your time in CC). I would drop the combi-melta from the Chaplain as he should be CC focused and will likely spend most of his time in that role (I assume he will be with the assault squad). I disagree with Fetterkey on giving sergeants melee weapons (though not on his recommendations if you do take such a weapon). I've always liked my sergeants to carry power fists just for the threat factor and versatility and it has paid off many times. True, you will lose that extra attack (since you won't have 2 fists) but the ability to lay down a big wallop if need be is nice in my personal opinion and worth the trade off. I know that many here won't agree with this but I would say give it a try...power fists are fun! Power weapons, like you have already, are also good if you don't want to give up your initiative or lose your extra attack (you will definitely want to go with a bolt pistol though).

Please re-post your list if you decide to work in any of the afore mentioned changes, Ive been wanting to run a SM list for awhile, but havent for some years and have only a rough idea of what I want to do. Also, Im rolling in Cities of Death, so it may not work the same, heh.
The original list looked good, I do agree with the mentioned changes/swaps.

I've always found my plasma pistols to be wonderful. Usually don't put them on the Sarge, but several times a lucky plasma shot took out something no one else in the squad could scratch. And the risk of Get's Hot! is easily overcome by the 3+ armor save. Just put it on someone who isn't the sarge, and it's very likely to pay for itself far more often than burn up a guy.
The extra armor is definitely not worth it on the Pred. It's benefit is tiny.
LOVE the PW on the Sarge, but you need the pistol, not the bolter. (Like everyone said...)

Thanks to all for the suggestions. Sorry I had not posted an list yet.updated Here's what it has evolved into:
HQ: Space Marine Chaplain (1#, 115 pts)
1 Space Marine Chaplain @ 115 pts (...in Power Armour)
1 ...in Power Armour (Frag Grenades; Krak Grenades; Power Armour; Rosarius; Jump Pack; Bolt Pistol; Crozius Arcanum)
Troops: Tactical Squad (11#, 205 pts)
9 Tactical Squad @ 205 pts (Frag Grenades; Krak Grenades; Power Armour; Bolt Pistol x9; Bolter x7; Flamer; Missile Launcher; Rhino)
1 Sergeant (Frag Grenades; Krak Grenades; Bolt Pistol; Chainsword)
1 Rhino (Searchlight; Smoke Launchers; Storm Bolter)
Troops: Tactical Squad (11#, 205 pts)
9 Tactical Squad @ 205 pts (Frag Grenades; Krak Grenades; Power Armour; Bolt Pistol x9; Bolter x7; Flamer; Missile Launcher; Rhino)
1 Sergeant (Frag Grenades; Krak Grenades; Bolt Pistol; Chainsword)
1 Rhino (Searchlight; Smoke Launchers; Storm Bolter)
Fast Attack: Assault Squad (10#, 250 pts)
9 Assault Squad @ 250 pts (Frag Grenades; Krak Grenades; Jump Pack; Power Armour; Bolt Pistol x7; Chainsword x9; Plasma Pistol; Plasma Pistol)
1 Sergeant (Frag Grenades; Krak Grenades; Jump Pack; Power Armour; Plasma Pistol; Power Weapon)
Heavy Support: Predator (1#, 120 pts)
1 Predator @ 120 pts (Searchlight; Smoke Launchers; Autocannon; Lascannon (each side))
Elite: Dreadnought (1#, 105 pts)
1 Dreadnought @ 105 pts (Searchlight; Smoke Launchers; Dreadnought CCW; Multi-Melta; Storm Bolter)
The Chaplain will indeed be leaping around with the Assault Squad. I can't seem to lose my love of the plasma pistol. I may regret it once I start playing with them, but they fit my mental image of what they would use.
Looking a little more sane?

I personally don't like running a solo dreadnought, especially not one that will be footslogging across the battlefield with the relatively short range of a multi-melta. In my opinion they work best in at least pairs dropped behind enemy lines. However, if you can keep him alive long enough to reach the enemy I feel dreads are pretty effective and have had great success with them in the past...he is very likely to be a fire magnet though.

I admit I just threw the Dread on b/c I already had it from the AoBR set. What would be a better use of the points if I wanted something a little more in-your-face? I have the Predator on there for long range fire support and vehicle control, even though it doesn't really feel right for the army.

If you want to run one Dreadnought and don't mind buying another I'd drop the Predator for another one. They can hide behind your Rhinos on the way up the board. That extra 15 points could be used to add a power sword and melta bombs to a tactical squad.

A friend told me something that I though rather zen like in its simplicity:
One of something is not scary. Two of something, thats scary.
I like running 2 dreads cause if you put them together, your opponent doesnt know which one to take down first, so it ends up costing the enemy some units. If you do take 2, outfit them exactly the same; you don't want to make one a higher priority target. A las cannoned dread will be targeted (and destroyed) a lot faster then the standard melta dread. The points can be used elsewhere if you make them the same.
Other than that, the other comments seems pretty solid.
Shaping up to be a good list IMO.
Cheers

Death-Dealing Dark Angels Devastator

I primarily face off against a Marine player, so allow me to toss in some advice. Drop something to get a squad of terminators (I'd suggest the assault squad.) Even without upgrades (i.e - AoBR models) carrying power fists and storm bolters, they are nasty. Virtually impossible to kill, possessing great range, and lethal in CC, they rarely ever get wiped off the board. Also, I disagree with the poster who said that you need two dreads to get the job done, but I concur with the recommendation of putting on longer range weapons. My opponent runs one with an assault cannon and it is quite formidable. Do I take it out? I sure do, but it threatens an enourmous portion of the battlefield and - when used in tandem with the termies - forces me into horrific positions. Sometimes it ties me up for several rounds (unlucky rolls) sealing the game before it really begins.
I think the rest of your list is pretty solid, but if you dropped some tac marines and a rhino, you might be able to squeeze in a devestator squad with Missile Launchers. My opponent also uses them and it makes the game atrocious. As a matter of fact, his list has forced me to drop Orks and join the forces of Chaos! He uses very little from outside the AoBR box, proving that - as Marines in real life often do - they accomplish more with less!
Good luck and I hope you punish your opponents as badly as I have.

Here's the latest incarnation:
HQ: Space Marine Chaplain (1#, 115 pts)
1 Space Marine Chaplain @ 115 pts (...in Power Armour)
1 ...in Power Armour (Frag Grenades; Krak Grenades; Power Armour; Rosarius; Jump Pack; Bolt Pistol; Crozius Arcanum)
Troops: Tactical Squad (11#, 205 pts)
9 Tactical Squad @ 205 pts (Frag Grenades; Krak Grenades; Power Armour; Bolt Pistol x9; Bolter x7; Flamer; Missile Launcher; Rhino)
1 Sergeant (Frag Grenades; Krak Grenades; Bolt Pistol; Chainsword)
1 Rhino (Searchlight; Smoke Launchers; Storm Bolter)
Troops: Tactical Squad (11#, 205 pts)
9 Tactical Squad @ 205 pts (Frag Grenades; Krak Grenades; Power Armour; Bolt Pistol x9; Bolter x7; Flamer; Missile Launcher; Rhino)
1 Sergeant (Frag Grenades; Krak Grenades; Bolt Pistol; Chainsword)
1 Rhino (Searchlight; Smoke Launchers; Storm Bolter)
Fast Attack: Assault Squad (10#, 250 pts)
9 Assault Squad @ 250 pts (Frag Grenades; Krak Grenades; Jump Pack; Power Armour; Bolt Pistol x7; Chainsword x9; Plasma Pistol; Plasma Pistol)
1 Sergeant (Frag Grenades; Krak Grenades; Jump Pack; Power Armour; Plasma Pistol; Power Weapon)
Elite: Dreadnought (1#, 105 pts)
1 Dreadnought @ 105 pts (Searchlight; Smoke Launchers; Dreadnought CCW; Multi-Melta; Storm Bolter)
Elite: Dreadnought (1#, 105 pts)
1 Dreadnought @ 105 pts (Searchlight; Smoke Launchers; Dreadnought CCW; Multi-Melta; Storm Bolter)
I think the Dreads keep the spirit of the strike force I want to run. I don't like the idea of forcing them to shamble across the battlefield, but using the Rhinos as cover is an interesting idea I am eager to try. I would like to run a Term squad, but will likely wait until I expand this list out to 1500 points before adding them. I'm primarily keeping the two Tac squads so I can have some objective capture options. With two full squad or 4 combat squads, I have some flexibility in objective holding. Since I'm the only one in my area (that I know of) that is playing 40k, I'll likely develop an Ork list so me and an interested friend can learn the rules and practice. I'll be putting that list up for comment pretty soon.
Thanks everyone for your help!

I like your list now. It should have enough anti-vehicle to take out even a dual Land Raider list, and enough anti-horde to keep the Orks and Tyranids at bay. It might not be the deadliest list at this points level, but it will be solid and is a good base to expand from.

The last list looks decent in my opinion. It may be a challenge to advance the dreads behind cover but if it works they should prove pretty effective. Good luck.

My only suggestion would be to replace the Assault Squad loadout with 2 Flamers for the boys and a PF, Pair of LC, or TH for the Seargent. Loosing expensive Assault Marines to Get's Hot is a real pain.
I try to always put Plasma with Tactical Squads, where it's cheaper, and on cheaper models. They also focus on shooting, where as Assault Marines need to focus on assaulting.
