Hey guys,
I just started WHFB and picked up ogres. That said ill get to the point.
Why would I want heavy armor on my tyrant or bruiser?
I am still very new to the WHFB rules, so I may be wrong, but it appears to me that after the Mawseeker big name, (and even toothcracker spell,) which puts him at T6(7) any attack made against him that has even a half-decent chance of wounding him in the first place, would be strong enough to completely negate it.
Is there something I'm unaware of?

It's just helpful to have, but is usually worthless.

A 5+ is generally worthless in any army. Most shooting that you are actually concerned about is at least -1 or -2, so you don't get any real armor against that. In CC, any thing that can hold up to a ogre character is probably packing a S5+ weapon, so you don't get anything there either. What it is good against is S3 with no mods, things that T6-7 don't worry about. The only instance where it MIGHT be worth your time to put heavy armor on a character, is if you also give him an Iron fist. In CC you have 5 from Heavy armor, 4 from the shield option of ironfist, and 3 for the HW + shield bonus. Since you would only put that on a bruiser that isn't your BSB, that means you almost never will want to use it.

I dont remember how expensive but I believe it is cheep enough to toss it on there and be happy when it occasionally passes one save.
For a guy with 5 wounds I would take heavy armor for 15 points or so.

I never put heavy armor on my characters when I make my list as it has very little impact on the game. However, when making an Ogre list, you may find yourself quite often with 30 or so unspent points because of the cost of the models(unless you are using Gnoblars). In that case I will sometimes go back and add things like heavy armor and sword gnoblars just to fill in the points.

Looking through the orge kingdom armybook i've wondered this same question myself. Still at T6, you can be harmed by str 3, although not that often. I've managed to pull it off at times, and laughed when a str3 skaven unit champ stabs a ogre tyrant in a challenge once or twice, and then wins combat typically by 3-4. Ever have your tyrant run down by a 100 pt unit? That's why you do it, so that you reduce your change of losing combat to a 1-2, and often stick around in the safety of combat, to play the kill the little one's game another round.

if you are facing elves with their silly little bows or blocks empire swordsmen the 5+ can be a nice bit of insurence, combinit with the ironfist and it becomes pretty good.
Take the wyrdstone necklace and you have a decently resiliant charecter.
and even if you have -1 or -2 to your armor so what, after all a 5+ or 6+ save is better then none at all You are correct that strength three isn't much of a threat but then again when a 400 point charecter with only 1 wound left goes down because he took 2 str three wounds and had no save, this can absolutly ruin a game for you.
What can kill TH/ SS terminator, not a lascannon, not a plasma gun, only 10 bolter shots can kill him.

Thats a good point, i guess im just used to 40k, where I would never buy a 5+ save. But if im 30 points under and I cant buy another ogre, i guess theres not much better to spend the points on.

Yeah, that's one thing i had to get used to. Personally i think they need to have the same save rules for both games.
I mean take Invulns first than take you armor. And cover should reduce BS not give a save. (lets face it,that little tree is not going to stop a Lascannon)
