Hi,

Could someone recommend a primer that I can paint on? I need black, but I might get white too just in case. I have several painted models that I (foolishly) took the weapons off of and replaced with unprimered ones. I'd like to paint on the primer so I can just get the bits that still need painting

Thanks!

I second Gesso.

It comes in white, black and grey varieties. The white can be coloured with paint.

A 16oz jar costs about $15.

There's an article on priming with Gesso.

I third Gesso.

If you're not convinced, take a look at this article:

On the subject of Gesso, my art teacher always reminds us to make sure that the lid is closed well. otherwise it dries out overnight, and you just wasted a good chunk of money.

Hi guys, thanks for the tips! So vallejo or gesso... is there a store (Michaels?) where I could get one or the other, without having to order it?

Thanks

Edit: Wow, the article looks a little over my head! (the one that's linked to, I didn't check to see if there's a Dakka one yet). So the brand for gesso is Liquitex (gesso is not a brand)? Is this the easiest option for me? I'm teaching full-time this semester and so ease of use usurps awesomeness... so if there is an easier (but less awesome?) option, I'd love to hear that, too...

I'm referring to the mixing the article seems to be going through. I can thin paints, but that's about it as far as painting ability for me

Forgive my ignorance, please

I have the Liquitex Gessos and they are awesome.
Due to where I live spray painting isn't an option and I was deeply unhappy with paint on primers. I've tried Vallejo, Reaper, and one other I forget the name of.
If you do end up going with gesso, do get Liquitex. As Kilkrazy mentioned it comes in a variety of colors, white, grey, black, and even clear. Any craft store worth it's salt will carry it. Michaels, Hobby Lobby or your local Dick Blick.
Gesso, incase you weren't aware is what they prep canvas for painting.
Yeah gesso isn't a brand.

Gesso. You can get it at any art store. You also don't have to be neat when putting it on the model since it shrinks a little when it dries. So just glob it on.
