Hello all,
What is the default point value for most games? I have a VC army and am new to 7th rules.

It really depends on how many models you have to start. Most people generally try to start at 1000 pts. and move up from there. 2000 or 2250 are fairly common for standard games. I have also seen an increase lately in the 1999 point games. I guess people are trying to play a more unit-based rather than character-based game at that level.

Default at my FLGS is 1750. Its small enough to allow people to play with models they have and large enough for a decent 2 hour game.

2000 even is the most common size in the world. The smallest size that allows a Lord choice.
2250 is increasingly common in competitive games in the last ten years, as it gives you a little more to play with, and plays in about the same time.

And has thus pulled up points at the FLGS I game at anyway. I'm trying to make a push back to 2k games, it's a bit trimmed and I think addresses some OTT elements in certain armybooks. Also, I tend to build 2k lists and then add toys up to 2250, so 2k means I don't have all this bloat on my list Also Manny, do you know if the Colonial is 2k again next year? How did everybody take that last go round? - Salvage

2250 is normal. It gives people more room to play with some of the toys in their armies. For a lot of armies 2k is extremely limited.

1999 is nice, as it gives a lot of troops while sticking with hero choices. I'm actually a fan of them, even though chaos caps out at Ld 8 in those games.
At 2000, a lord choice easily ends up eating almost 1/4 of your army. For some armies it isn't even hard to do. It's really kind of depressing playing a 1500 point game, then just adding a single model and that's suddenly "much larger". Or heck going from 1750 to 2000 and watching your army actually shrink!
2250 is better, I think, as it's lord-level, but gives a little breathing room with that extra 250.
Around here though a lot of people prefer 3000, myself included. It adds a lot of options, and rarely hinges on a single dice roll like smaller games do. It's easier to recover from a single bad turn, too.
Hence, I'm LOVING the 'Ard Boyz competitions

For me, 3k (with the second Lord slot and additional rares) has a lot of the same issues as 2k, but also takes longer to play.
I usually like 2250 or 2500 (the latter if I want even more bulk to the army without more characters). 1999 is a fun point size as well, though not all armies perform equally without a Lord.

I was at the colonial this last year. 2K was a interesting change of pace. It was a 6 game GT instead of your standard 5, so it spreads the field a bit more for as far as points distribution. I don't think players minded mixing it up a bit, major complaints seemed to be paints judging, comp, and other factors, which tend to flux from event to event. 6 games at GT level was a lot for me. I live locally to that area, but I can imagine the stress guys have with arranging transport for a friday night game, 3 for saturday, then 2 for sunday.
As far as what it is this year, best bet is to watch on the Colonial forums for the decision by the organizer. I'm in the gaming group that hosted it, but I won't pretend to be the person making the decision, so its going to be up in the air until Spring. There's a nice event Conflict in January 2010, pending how things go there i'm sure all the TO's will put their input in and decisions will be made out of that.
I had the fortune in playing in both a 1999 and a 2999 event, and highly enjoyed both. They were a blast and the focus was more on gaming/ tactics and less on a killy lord of doom. Most GT's/ events will hover around the 2k-2250 pts. My thoughts are have a 2K list your comfortable with, then have a 2250 list your comfortable list for tournments, and 1999 lists for games for fun, because at that point the stress is less on characters and more on units sync and tactical game play.

Thanks njpc, I forgot to answer that one before.
B_S, as he said, there’s no way to tell for sure which way Matt’s going to run it (2k v. 2250, 5 or 6 games) until closer to the event. For my money, six games was fun, even given that my crew was driving down from NH, MA, and ME. Gives you a longer run of games, more value for money, etc. Of course, given the length of our drive, we pretty much plan to take Friday off work anyway. I’m sure there were other folks out there who prefer to just stick to the old five game schedule, but I’m not really sure how the numbers break down in favor v. against.

Thanks to you both for the Colonial comments. I forgot that there was a game Friday night, that could be a bit rough (but not overly a problem for a grad dreadnought like myself). I'll keep my eyes open for announcements as we get closer to 2010. As to Conflict, by the time I heard about it it was already full. A couple dudes from my club might get in off the wait list, but I didn't bother this year.

2250 if we're looking to do a moderately serious game. 500 pt border skirmish if we want something fast.
