So, they have Feel No Pain, Eternal Warrior and two wounds, but they can't move very fast and will still die easily to a powerfist or a couple of AP2 weapons.
I can't see any use for them unless you're playing on a board that's 90% cover.
|
People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made. |

In lower point games they can be irritating. They can fill in army list gap's reasonably, but even then I question if they are point efficient.
In higher point games, they die too quickly. Even when kitted out as terminators with a storm shield. They may seem survivable on paper, but I lost mine to pot-shots all the time. They work well in pairs, but after kitting out two of them you almost run into the question of should I just take another unit instead?
They don't put out enough attacks to scare units. MC's can usually bully on them pretty well, and they have a difficult time catching vehicles.
A good load-out would be terminator, storm shield, chainfist.. But it would be a mild pain to model. Idea being he can go slap around walkers.

Use them with TH/SS terminator armour, there good support squads, run them up behind a TWC squads and combat Dreads, tacticals, tanks.

They would be a good escort for dreadnaughts and you can arm them with a storm shield, thunder hammer or chainfist and suit them up in terminator armor. I'd almost go so far as to say every SW army should have one.

SS/chainfist, Terminator armour. Hello unkillable unit, unless your opponent pours all their firepower into it for a turn. Now take 3.

Problem is with taking 3 armed like that, you are looking at 255pts.
For that much you could get 4 thunderwolf cavalry with a hammer.
A redeemer. A squad of terminators in a pod. 3 units of scouts with melta guns. A kitted out grey hunter squad with a transport and so on and so on.
As I said before, they may seem unkillable.. But mine went down constantly to random fire. When combining it with a unit, I lost him to combat resolution. It doesn't take much at all to kill him. 3 of them will be tough, sure.. But for the points invested I think you could get a much more efficient unit that contributes more to the game and your army as a whole.
They are slow, expensive, and easy to avoid or kill.
Its not hard to work one into a list, but I'd never suggest multiples of them.. And don't expect much out of him either. I'm thinking for 15 points over the terminator/ ss/ th option, I'd rather just put another rune priest on the table.

I like them. Thunderhammer, Stormshield, 2 Fenrisian Wolves, 100 points.
toss him at just about anything and he will either kill it or tie it up for a couple of turns, long enough for your more important elements to either move in for the kill, or move away and nullify the use of that unit for your enemy.
A few days ago I played an apocalypse match where one guy on our team had 5 lone wolves with stormshields and MotW, one of them killed a bloodthirster solo, another one put 3 wounds on a blood thirster, tied it up for 4 turns, and only died with Scabiethrax came around to kill him, and another one put a few wounds on a bloodthirster, tieing it up for 3 full game turns.
that was without the thunderhammer, I mathhammered it out, and ran a few dice-offs here at work, you can use this unit to tie up a mob of 30 boys with slugga/choppa and a powerclaw for at least 2 rounds, probly 3 rounds of combat. For a 100 point unit consisting of 3 models, thats amazing.
I plan on fielding 2 of them at my next tournament, I will be running them behind my rhinos, Ill post a thread detailing how they do.

I was thinking of keeping it simple, Chain Sword, Storm Shield, Mark of the Wulfen, Melta-Bombs and two Wolves.
That’s 65 points and use him as a small unit, vehicle hunter.
He can run during the shooting phase if needed.
The two Wolves give him a couple of extra wounds and attacks if they make it into CC.
Once he makes into CC that’s 1d6+2 Rending Attacks the 1st turn, and if he wins the CC he may be able to wipe out a full squad if he moves far enough.
The other thoughts are.
Screen him with something cheep like wolves
Have him follow in some Swift Claws or Blood Claws.
Put him in front of a large Blood Claws unit as there screen.
Just remember he is a low cost free kill point.
You WANT him to die in Kill Point Games.

I agree with the other posters:
Terminator Armor, Storm Shield, Chainfist
Every turn you are running towards your enemy, if they make combat great, but chances are your opponents shooting is devoted to the Land Raider filled with nasty that is running right next to them. Lone Wolves are too tough to be taken down in one round of shooting (unless you are paying against Guard) and even if they do, they just provided a massive distraction to more expensive units.
And in 33% of regular games, you want that anyways.
I regularly play games against Space Wolves with one or two of these guys, backed up by cheap Long Fangs, Grey Hunters, and Land Raiders full of CC troops (which can include WOlf Guard Terminators in a Logan list), and you have the foundation for a nasty list.
Thunderwolf Cav are nice, but a bit underwhelming.

Remember that they give up zero killpoints if they are destroyed.
But they give up Kill Points if they are not killed, but the upside is that if they are left alone, they can wreck a lot of stuff, so your opponent is forced to deal with it and get nothing in the process.
Lone Wolves are Dreadnoughts for foot lists.
Any Wolf list that doen't all drop pod should use Lone Wolves.

I find the idea of using chainfists to do it rather anti-climatic. Just for fluffy reasons, Im gonna arm my Lone Wolves with a TH/ SS/ TDA just so I can say "Its hammertime!" before he beats down a Carnifex or what have you.

Disagree. A full mech list will be better served by taking Dreadnoughts in the same 2/3 slots.

I would only bother if I knew I was up against a lot of Walkers or MCs, and make use of Chainfists/Thunderhammers with the SS/TDA kit respectively. Pretty redundant for competitive lists, but I know I've had opponent's dreadnoughts running away from my loner!

I am looking at making 4 over all and maybe one with a Frost Blade ot two]
•Power Armor, Chain Sword, Mark of the Wulfen, and Two Wolves {I like the idea of the Wolves} [Beast Slayer and Rending will do good vs. Armor of 11]
•Power Armor, Close Combat Weapon, Storm Shield, Mark of the Wolfen, and Two Wolves
•Terminator Armor, Thunder Hammer, Storm Shield, and Two Wolves [it looks like a good combo to use]
•Terminator Armor, Mark of the Wolfen, and Two Wolves [I know the Power Weapon Will be a waist with MotW, but the running Terminator model with two Storm Bolters, Wolf Pelt and, the Two Wolves will look cool.]

Lone Wolves have worked out for me two ways so far.
1) Ignored due to 'It's only one model' or 'If I kill him, it helps you'.
This is good. This means I have a thunderhammer/SS in your line eating face.
2) Focus Fired. 'HOLY CRAP It's a guy with a TH/SS!!!!'
This is good. This means I'm soaking fire that isn't going into my main force.
What's to lose about either of these options? He makes a fairly cheap distraction or a fairly cheap model that your opponent learns not to ignore.

Putting a Lone Wolf in a borrowed transport is an interesting idea - there are a number of popular SW builds where units take a rhino or razorback but don't ride in it. The question is whether a taxi ride in a rhino/razorback is that much better than running - a bit faster, and I guess the vehicle could be considered an ablative wound? A 'charging' vehicle would certainly be a great distraction.
I suspect though that on many tables a rhino/razorback will be a liability in terms of being a big target compared to a single marine. And it's an easy KP for your opponent...
But still, this is probably worth considering in some games, if the terrain and opponent are appropriate and you happen to have a 'spare' vehicle in your army list anyway.

Hmm my Friend runs an interesting Loner. He arms him with twin wolf claws and TDA.
It means that he is resilient to small arms fire from TDA and FNP (only one in every 12 wounds is taken). He has 4 attacks with either re-rolls to hit or to wound.
However he is not amazingly hard to kill if the enemy fire heavy weapons on him. Thing is this is exactly what he wants as it distracts fire from the tanks. Having one glaring weakness actually means he draws more fire than if he had a storm shield.
In a kill point game he heads off towards the nearest CC specialist unit armed with power weapons.
