Why are they str 4 in the space marine codex but only str 3 in the IG codex? They're the same weapon, but do space marines get better amo or just know how to make their shots count more?

And heaven forbid if the Marine would also happen to have an intimidating looking, vertical scar. Then you're surly boned. Those guys are the worst. Not a chance I'd say.

I think it's because they have some kind of manstopper rounds, but I don't remember where I read this. In the last codex they were strength 3.

Space marines are stronger, hence they can handle a more powerful round easier then a regular human. That would allow them to use say an 8 gauge instead of a 12 gauge in an assault scenario.

You guys are missing the most obvious and most correct answer;

Because the rules/codex tell you that it is thus!

Trying to apply logic, common sense and IRL physics to WH40K is just plain stupid.

In game terms, SM shotguns use "Manstopper" rounds which have a much heavier propellent charge, giving them the extra strength.

and also because if IG shotguns were S4 there would be absolutely no reason not to take them. As it is now, lasgun vs. shotgun is basically a wash, but 1 pt of str would seal the deal.

IG cant afford Man Stopperâ„¢ rounds for their shotguns.

The fancy-pants astartes OTOH can afford gilded shotguns with built in compasses etc...

I believe they choose to throw the shotgun at the enemy rather than fire it. The recoil could kill a guardsman

Its because space marines get a special shotgun, made by the adeptus mechanicus, with holy ammunition. The Imperial Guard get a shotgun slapped together by joe-bob on a forge world, along with hessian sack armor and motorbike helmets.

Why you would ever take a shotgun for SM scouts is beyond me though.

So you can shoot and then assault.

In All Fairness, it's not meant to actually be taken. It's a Legacy Option, nothing more.

Why are there three kinds of shotguns readily available to imperium soldiers. Standard guardsmen have their str3, marines have str4, and ogryns have str5, why.

I think the difference might be in rounds fired. A space marine can fire a shotgun and maintain accuracy much more effectivly then a guardsmen. A ogryn with the kind of strenght that puts space marines to shame can handle the recoil much more effectively and theirs has a three round burst setting.

A new day, a new time zone.

It's also a rippergun, not a shotgun.

The description for a rippergun mentions that it is in fact a shotgun.
