Is it just me or do the imperial guard tanks not make sense? Don't get me wrong, I love the look but... If a infantry figure represented a 6 foot tall man in real life, that would mean that it is a 1/58 scale, therefore a leman russ battle cannon would have a caliber of approx. 14.5 inches. A shell that size would need a substantial ammount of explosive to get it moving; in WW2, geman 12 inches fired shells that weighed 500lbs. Assuming that in the 40th millenium new, more powerful explosives have been discovered, the shell would still weigh at least 350 to 400 lbs. It would impossible for a single man (the loader) to: a) lift the shell. and b) move it around inside the leman russ's turet to get it into the barrel.Also-this is funny- a shell of that size, when fired, would either blow the entire turret off of the tank or flip the whole thing over. I would be interested what other people think...

I know it doesnt make sense , but majority of games workshop fans take pride in having the biggest or the most "powerful" creations .
For example you know how often this topic comes up:
Who will win , space marines or terran marines in SC
and you go watch 40k fan boys bash terran marines to death.

I agree! I want a tank barrel so long that it needs a separate vehicle to hold up the tip.

Look at the lumbering behemoth rule, thats partly why.
Also, to have a 14 AV means their armor is near the strength of adamantium, rather heavy.
Yes, this would stil be kick back, but that's what the scatter dice is for.
There is some logic there imho, but by no means was it intentional... yes GW, i'm looking at you.

Welcome!
Other things to consider:
-if a SM fired his bolter one handed, then the recoil would snap his wrist.
-If a titan took a single step, it's leg would sink into the ground.
-A Thunderhawk would never fly, it's not aerodynamically viable!
Funny, eh?

Funny, eh?
1: His armour probably has hydraulic systems to lessen the recoil and a Marines enhanced skeleton could take the strain
2: That's why Titan's feet are so big: their mass is spread over a large area
3: It could fly, it would just need to produce a lot of lift.

sorry to be a fluff lawyer, but the 3rd edition rule book had a diagram of a boltgun, and it said that the bolts were like little rockets which exploded inside the target, so they didn't have much recoil.
but yeah, welcome to dakka.
and I prefer the baneblade...two massive cannons, 6 twin linked heavy bolters and two lascannons. throw in a coaxial autocannon and the option to add heavy stubbers and hunter killer missiles.....then you've got a tank thats over the top! Love it.

NO! Geeze, first off the shells are not propelled by 'explosives' they are propelled by magna-gravatonic drives fuels by the McGuffin Coil in the engine. Plus the tanks are made out of solid adamantium so they won't blow their own turrets off! Doesn't anyone read the fluff anymore? If anything they are too not big enough!

Welcome to Dakka and I have a solution to this dilemna.
Well its simple really. The shells are not really explosives but filled with awesome sauce. Awesome sauce is very flammable. and the crew are Daemoneetes.
Any more questions?

We're talking about big tanks fighting aliens and other big bug things, with men with laser weapons behind them and massive vehicle's that somehow hover.
Oh and spaceships that fly through another dimension.
I think you have more to complain logic-wise than the size of the guns...
oh and welcome to dakka.

Ok sure, the tanks are made of admantium and the shell are propelled by"awesome sauce" but i still find it funny that a tank of the 40th millenium is smaller than one from World War 2. The german Tiger 2 tank weighed 76.8 tons and had a top speed of 38km/h. Leman Russ's only weigh 60 tons and can only go 30km/h (see Gunheads novel by: steve parker)

If we're going to be specific, LRBTs aren't made of adamantium anyway, which is supposedly a light but highly tensile alloy. But no one really cares that much...

Hmm. Agree to disagree with you on the Titan one- I still think the minute it took a step it would sink!

Welcome to Dakka,
Kilometres are smaller than Miles sooooo, 38K/H and 30 MpH are approximately the same speed, i believe.
I think a Space Marine would definitely defeat a terran marine in single handed combat. Do Terran marines even have any kind of genhancers?
And who cares, I want the barrel to be as wide across as a garbage can and I want that little man of the 40,000 era to be loading shells that weigh as much as cars. What do we care? Us IG generals like our big guns =]

But this is 38,000 years in the future, and the ships fire torpedo's the size of our tallest buildings.
A grot blaster is 7 times more powerfull than a desert. and a bolter is more powerful tan that, so i dare say they wouldn't be strectching the mechanicus to the limits to make a shell like that
