In a bit of a dilema at the moment in deciding which bosspole my warboss should have

The reason I ask is because I'm not sure if the big banner is abit excessive or not

Use the banner if you are confident with painting a nice looking logo on it.

The warbanner isnt that execessive (its loud, and attention-grabbing, like Orks!). But you do need to think about what you're gonna put on there in terms of symbols, clan icons, and glyphs. If you have a look at the Ork Codex, alot of the banners have the main clan icon or glyph that represents the boss' name, and then smaller glyphs that represent the aspect of that Boss, like "Grimm" or "Snik" or "Dred" or "Killy" and so on.

That being said, I'd probably save the warbanner for a Nob and use it as a Nob banner, since it seems its more appropriate for that.

Dat looks loike a right propa Bloodaxe Waaaghboss!

I say the banner, paint the bloody axes on it and add axe heads to the ends of the horizontal pole...then some greenstuffed 'ropes' hanging down with some marine helms, skulls and so on as trophies.
