I have finally gotten around to playing my first game Cities of Death and a few questions came up that I wasn't sure on.

1. Movement using city ruins (pg 10). My opponent said that when moving through ruins you you can move up one flight for a difficult terrain roll of 3-5 and then move horizontally 3-5" inches as well. In the case of rolling 6's you can go up two levels and move six inches horizontally. Is this correct? From my understanding of the diagram provided it is, but it just doesn't seem right to able to move that much.

2. Another question that came up is when do you declare stratagems? For example we played the Relief Force mission, I picked the building I was going to defend and was placing models in the building. He then states he has taken the tank traps stratagem and doesn't know when to place it. I read it and couldn't find anything about when we use them. So he just sets them up around my building while I am still deploying and screws my deployment for tanks and my reinforcements in drop pods. Should he have had to place them before I ever picked the building I was going to defend?

Thanks,
BuZzZzJaY

It's correct for the rules as printed in CoD... but it's worth keeping in mind that CoD was written for 4th edition, where movement in area terrain in the normal 40K game worked the same way. So the movement as illustrated in the CoD book isn't actually a change to the rules specifically for CoD so much as a reminder of how the movement rules work. (Or in this case, worked)

With that in mind, if you're using CoD in 5th edition I would recommend using the rules for Buildings and Ruins as printed in the 5th edition rulebook instead, to keep things consistent. Which means that horizontal and vertical distance add together for total movement.

Page 16. You declare strategems before either of you starts deploying.

I would agree with the less then sane one on his chosen methods for using the rules.

Though for the record there is no true answer for your first question. GW in their infinite awesomeness offer no support for past releases - so how movement through buildings is handled is totally up to whatever you and your opponent agree upon. I do think insaniak's option seems a logical and simple solution.

I also agree with Insaniak.
It's definitely worth discussing whether to use 4th or 5th edition for movement in ruins before starting the game, too.
