I am looking to do four pillars that are clear. I was wanting to know if any of you guys had any cheap ideas. As of now I have seen some of the post that explain this type of clear liquid.

Here is a link to one but does anybody else have any ideas.

You're probably looking at clear resin casts for pillars.

You can get starter sets fairly cheaply - it's the rubber that is the not-so-cheap part.

Otherwise, you may be able to find clear plastic wedding cake pillars.

Sounds like an interesting project. What sort of size/height/scale are we looking at here?
Does it have to be load bearing/particularly strong?
Does it have to be perfectly formed/perfectly clear, slightly translucent etc
What are the pillars for and do you have/can you find a picture of the sort of pillar that you want?
All of these things can help us to help you!

Modern, minimalist unpatterned pillars could easily be cut from round or ???agonal acrylic rod or other found objects (Lightbulbs, xmas baubles?) whereas Tzeenchiac psychotwisting warp pillars could be created with heated bottles and resins maybe???

Casting could definately be an option. 'Hirst Arts' makes some nice kits. Just be careful with temperatures!!!

Generally, and for 'Classic Roman Columns' I would say thay you would be best off using clear acrylic rod and dremmeling out the vertical lines (not sure what to call them, answers on a postcard?) and making the tops and bottoms from sheet perspex and wider acrylic rod.

Maybe your local crystal/hippy/bead shop could have something or perhaps suppliers for making chandelliers? Stacking two or more of these elements could work?

But i'd definately check decorative cake suppliers first as suggested by chromedog. It'll save you alot of work either way.

Hope this helps or I might be waaay off! Good Luck and keep us posted!

p.s Try changing the thread title to something like, 'How could I make clear columns/pillars for a diorama' or something like that. You'll probably get people thinking even if they don't click and perhaps one of them has a lightbulb moment "Ding!?!Ding". Just a thought.

@Alex Kolodotschko: The vertical lines on certain columns are the "fluting".

Hadn't thought of the perspex/acrylic rod idea - even though I do have a plastics place down the road that sells it in various sizes.

Sounds like an interesting project. What sort of size/height/scale are we looking at here?

Carnifex if not a little taller than that.
Does it have to be load bearing/particularly strong?

I would like the pillars to be strong so that they dont break easy.
Does it have to be perfectly formed/perfectly clear, slightly translucent etc

The pillars just have to be straight up with jagged edges and stuff but for the most part an upward direction.
What are the pillars for and do you have/can you find a picture of the sort of pillar that you want?

I was thinking about some type of pour so that I can place heads and skulls and other head types inside of the see threw pillars.
All of these things can help us to help you!

Hope the picture gives some type of understanding as to what I am going to make.

Abomination---

So I was thinking about my center piece and the background hock for it. I am going to set up four pillars and chains. The chains are going to have a bit of a Hellraiser feel to it and the pillars will be called the Pillars of Enslavement. The idea behind this is the pillars with the chains, bind the captive and then it allows choas to attempt to poses the soul and mind of whatever they have bond in the center of the Pillars of Enslavement.

So here is a snip of the center piece?

The idea is that the Tyranids invaded the planet to harvest the resourses of which they did not know that nurgle had already prepaired for there arrival. Once the nids had started there assault on the planet, nurgle forces moved in and removed all forms of the hive mind so that he could attempt to poses the lower minded best of the Tyranid army. Most have failed but the carnifex is showing promis, thus the reason for the I picked him as the center piece. I am going to have a nurgle invested Carni in the center of the PILLARS OF ENSLAVEMENT... mahah mahah, haha hahahahmahahahhahaha hamahah

What do you guys think? Hell I might even make a nid army with a nurgle theme to it,,,,

Automatically Appended Next Post:
The over idea is to be able to pour into a mold so that I can place the bits and such. That way after its complete I can then see the bits inside of the pillars as if they are trapped souls that were sacifriced for the gods.

Clear resin would be your best bet.

This is all just a rough idea, but if I were to do this, I would take a clear rod (maybe green rod like the necrons come with), attach it to the head and then run the tendrils around it. Paint the head and tendrils in neon shades of green. Mix the resin with some light green wash. Then pour the resin around it using a properly sized tube for the mold. Let dry and should come out pretty eerily. Model according to taste (i.e. chop up the top for a crystalline feel, or add bases for a alien containment capsule).

The end result should provide a bright light effect coming from the center and the head/tendrils.

Thats a sound idea adding the green wash to the cast, to give it a bit more of a nurgle feel.
