I have been thinking about the expense of a useful HE lord, and what I get from it, and it seems that fielding Korhil, and Caradryan would almost always get me more bang for my points, even at the cheapest most Lord builds in our army cost around 250.

Points: 315
Caradryan: MR3, 5+ AS, 4+ ward save, fear, he also hits pretty well, LD 9.
Korhil: Makes a unit Stubborn, 5+ AS/4+ against shooting, Immune to poison, hits very hard

This leads me to want to try the following list. . .

Caradryan
Korhil
Level 2 Mage
Level 2 Mage

Spear Men x 20, Full Command
Spear Men x 20, Full Command

20 Sword Masters, Full Command
20 Phoenix Guard or White Lions, Full Command
5 Shadow Warriors
2 x Repeater Bolt Throwers

My main list eschews a Lord in favor of more points for other stuff.

I forget who it was, I think it was Orlanth, but he made the astute point that (at least for combat Lords) effectiveness over a Noble is only ~1.5x whereas the points incresase almost 2 fold.

Still, I think I'd avoid such a large block of Swordmasters - too many points invested for the extra ranks.

Thanks for the quick reply. . .

The primary reason, I have been using such big squads of Sword Masters is the sheer amount of shooting they are subject to, I actually planned on using 7 wide with a character up front probably Caradryan, although its really hard to decide between which character in the unit.

Good posts on both parts, only time I go lord, I go big or go home.

Either prince/stardragon with full loadout.

or AM/full item loadout.

otherwise, I run something similiar to this.

I would at least switch out the Shadow Warriors for 2 Great Eagles. They just do the Warmachine hunting, march blocking and re-directing jobs a lot better.

The army also seems to lack a bit of speed. Flanking blocks that will generate more Combat Resolution then your Special units will be difficult.

Having said that, I think not including a Lord in a 2000 point list can be very effective for certain armies. The only High Elves Lords that are really add something that you can't get elsewhere in the army, are a Stardragon Prince or a Level 4 Wizard.
