I'm not talking about special characters. I'm talking about attaching something like a warboss and a mek to one unit of 'ard boyz... or something along those lines. I'm not asking if its a good idea either... just if its legal.

Yes. I don't have my rulebook handy, but it specifically says in the BGB that it is allowed.
In fact, it even talks about attaching 2 IC's to each other.

Yep. For Apocolpyse, I keep wanting to just throw every Ultramarine Special Character together in a Land Raider in the middle of a Land Raider formation and go to town.
