Subject: Heralds mounted or on chariots?

I've been reading over the chaos demons codex quite a bit and just noticed something while trying to put a list together. Generally the cost for mounting a herald costs more than putting a herald into a chariot, even though a charioted herald has superior stats. Any thoughts on this?
The only thing I can think of is that the chariot will have a larger footprint on the board, maybe twice as large. That being said you are getting an extra wound, so I must be missing something.
Any demons vets out there that can explain to me what I'm missing?

The Chariots lose the IC rule, meaning they can't hide in friendly units and count as a separate unit for your waves afaik

QFT
Yah pretty much the big disadvantage is you can't have the unit there hiding in take wounds before them or allocate with blood crushers.

Even though they lose IC status, Chariots are still a steal. I think they are a good idea.

40k doesn't have special slots...

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made. |

I prefer to field my Khornate heralds (including the Skulltaker) mounted on juggernaughts. As has been pointed out they keep their IC status and add to the complexity of the squad of Blood Crushers they join. It's pretty much a deathstar but wouldn't be the case otherwise. Sure on a chariot some of their stats are buffed but you can lose out on these quickly if your opponent chooses to individually target them.

Let him shoot the Chariots! They'll soak up so much fire the rest of your army will be untouched!

Having Khorne heralds on a jugg makes a lot of sense because it would fit right in with a group of crushers.
I'm looking at Tzeench chariots. I'd run them alone anyway. I'm thinking of going with 4 tzeentch chariots for my HQs.
My basic thought for a list at 1850 would be something like this:
4 chariot heralds of tzeentch
3x 3 flamers
3 squads of plague bearers (not fluffy with the rest of my tzeentch list but they can realy hold down an objective. I don't really like the horrors as I don't think they can outshoot any meq unit unless taken in a squad of 20. Maybe if the horrors were two or three points cheaper I'd consider them but at 17 points I can't accept them.
3x 3 screamers (to hunt armor)
3x soul grinders (I have not played a single demon game yet, but I don't like the survivability prospect of deep striking DPs. I would probably only consider running DPs if I were to make a list around epidemius as soul grinders can't add up the tally)

i have found that DPs are not nonviable, I run them in one of two ways, 155 pts with MoN, Iron Hide, Noxious Touch, Cloud of Flies which makes them mean against other MCs and allows them to take a fair beating (6s to wound most of the time)
otherwise i use 160 pts MoT, Daemonic Gaze, BoC, he is a lot easier to kill but he can dish out some decent damage and if you are good you can keep him 24 inches away so you wont be rapid fired until you want to be
I personally like the Nurgle Prince though, he trounces other infantry and MCs in assault, not great against tanks though ... :(
BTW take this with a grain of salt i have only played a few games with them (though i have used about 4 different daemon princes) these two just seemed to work the best.

A couple of comments. I would put the blue scribes or the masque in instead of one of your chariots. The pavane is priceless either for grouping up kills for the flamers or pulling stuff out of cover for the heralds and/or horrors.
The horror's seem expensive until you see what they do to non- meq outside of cover (see the comment about pavane up above). I like to take 7 man squads and they just tear up guard, tau, and most of the eldar units, warriors, stealers, you name it. with 3x3 flamers, and the chariot heralds you don't really need more meq killing ability.
I prefer daemon princes over grinders precisly because of survivability, when your entire army has a 4+ invul, with multiple wounds, it makes anti-tank kill like melta guns fairly worthless. You force people to have to rely on number of shots to take things out.

Grinders bring something to the army that princes can't provide, however since you have a lot of shooting with your Tzneetch units I don't think you need the walker, which is not always the case depending on your list.
