So I looked it up in the forums on to how best field a sternguard squad and it somehow concluded with them being effective in either a) 3 squads drop podding in or b) drop podding in with a squad of 9 and a librarian. However, I was thinking of maybe having a squad of ten with some combi-meltas and -flamers in a rhino as a kind of plug to reinforce any squad that was about to give way. So essentially doing their fluff job...also the army list I'm thinking of making will be Salamander and have Vulkan.

Anyways is a 10 man squad with an assortment of combi-meltas and -flamers riding a rhino a good idea to have in a mech list?

f.y.i. I actually haven't finished making the list yet so don't ask...probably will be 1,500 points or 2,000.

I use a sternguard squad with a librarian (gate of infinity), and beam them around to teloport beacons (or homing beacons, w/e). Librarian can take any other nice support power (reroll invuls is nice), or just take Tigerius .

Saves you a drop pod, and allows nice flexibility.

The dice are just used to give people false hope that they have a chance of winning. Chance favors the prepared mind.

I have used a Sternguard unit in a Rhino as a counter attack unit in higher point games. I give mine a powerfist sergeant and two plasma cannnons. I use the plasma cannons to pick off enemy infantry at range and then use the Rhinos mobility to drop them in rapid fire range at the right moment to break up an enemy assault that threatens my line. I've also occaisonally deployed them outside the Rhino in cover against armys with weak ranged attacks so that I can squeeze off the 24" bolter shots. I've had good success using them this way, but they are not a must-have in my armies.

Oh, I know they're not a must have. I'd just enjoy squeezing them in and having them earn their keep somehow :3

If you change to Crimson Fists and include Pedro, Sternguard count as scoring units, just throwing that out there for you.

Hmm I will keep that in mind. Though I'm mostly thinking about using Vulkan for twin linked goodness on meltas and flamers.

I play Salamanders, but I don't have a Vulkan. My local GW wont stock them, saying I have to buy online, and I haven't broken down and done it yet. But you could always use him for a "counts as" 1st company Captain for the Crimson Fists. But your fluff is yours alone, I'm just trying to help your effectiveness (I switched from CF to Salamanders)

Yeah I understand. I mean as much as I want an effective army I kind of want the fluff that comes with Vulkan's search of the primarch's few remaining treasures. Though then again I intend to field Land speeders so I suppose that isn't really accurate for salamanders right? xD

Noone said Salamanders wouldn't use Land Speeders at all, just few of them. So your force could be those nine Speeders a company fields at all

I run a six strong squad of Sternguard with 2 kombimeltas and sometimes a Sergeant with PF (just for the looks ^^) riding a Razorback. They do just fine destroying one heavy vehicle and afterwards they're a nice tarpit or a pain for the enemy's infantry depending on the priority given to them.

Ah I see, how are they in just taking on a squad of let's say...MEQs?

Just a little better in Assault.

Ultramarines Second Company - ~4000 points

Dark Eldar WIP - ~800 points

I haven't played MEQ's with them (except some Tau suits but then I preferred to down some firewarriors with them) but directly compared they're far inferior to let's say CSMs in shooting. They can open fire at 30" and within 18" they negate that worthwile armour save if you don't fear that get hot rule (and you shouldn't ^^)
But against any other kind of infantry they play out well. I could imagine they get targetted more often when brought in big numbers, but in a 5 or 6 man unit they usually don't draw much fire after they used their combimeltas. Thus they can always be the salt in your soup.

Drop lysander in with them. Re roll crazy bolters+ the fact that hes a close combat tank.

Ah okay. Now that I've thought about a bit more I'm thinking of just doing the common thing and drop podding them in with a librarian with gate and dome...of course, combi metlas too :O

Homing Beacons don't work for them, only the Locator ones do. Drop Pods can take them.

If you run a Drop Pod heavy list you can basically form a net across the battlefield for the Gate of Infinity. I ran a squad of five recently and they managed to take out a Genestealer squad, Hive Tyrant and a Carnifex. Before dieing in CC to a squad of Gaunts >_>

10 with Libraian sounds good, though.
I'm already converting up five more

Yeah I'm thinking of using the drop pod dance theory. Though I'm not really going too heavy. Just two for dreads to drop them in and and another for the actual squad. I'll probably have two locator beacons so I should be able to move around enough not get my squad wasted before I make use of them.

Honestly this is the most disgusting list I have seen

Space Marine Master of the Forge

Pedro Kantor

Sternguard Drop

Sternguard Drop

Ironclad Drop

Troop
Scout CC

Scout CC

h. Support

IronCLad

Dread w/ Multi

Dread w/ Multi

Its just disgusting as Pedro comes in with the sternguard and a mix of iron clads dreads.

Scouts move up w/ Pedro in range they get 4 attacks on the charge.

everything is in your face on turn 2.

If I lose it is because I had bad luck, if you win it is because you cheated.

That's a sick list. And for what, around 1500 points total?

I was just thinking of something like this last night, but couldn't put it all together.

The last time I used Stern heavily was this:

1500

Kantor.
10 Scouts, BP/CCW
10 Scouts, Shotguns
10 Scouts, Bolters
10 Stern, Pod, 5 Combi-meltas
10 Stern, Pod, 4 Combi-meltas
10 Stern, Pod, 5 Combi-meltas

Something like that...was just for fun. Nothing spectacular though.

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.
