Hey all,

I'm looking into personalising my IG a bit more by including some US Vietnam Era soldiers (probably from this site http://www.theassaultgroup.co.uk/store/home.php?cat=21&sort=productcode&sort_direction=0&page=1)

To keep the look correct I was going to include some UH 1 Bell Huey Helicopters to count as Valks, but I'm unsure what scale I should be getting to fit with 28mm models.

Any help?

Cheers, Disjointed.

No smaller than 1/48 - you're looking at an overall length of around 28cm on the Valkyrie. The length on most 1/48 comes in around 10 1/4 inches (26 or so cm) which should be close enough.

Something like this?

Bear in mind, this is a 1/35 scale one (and it is really big - too big for a 40k table - rotor span is wider than the wing span on a Valkyrie as well).

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

Somewhere in south-central England.

Use 1/48th scale.

This was thrashed out in a thread a few months ago.

You've got three main choices in aircraft kits.

1/72 is too small. It's about 20mm figure scale.
1/32 is too large and there aren't many around.
1/48 is the right size for the table top and there is a lot of selection available.

For an aircraft as small as the Huey I'd look into getting a 1/35 or 1/32 version. Although at 1/48 Revell does offer a really cheap Huey for around $10.

Someone converted a Huey into a Valkyrie around here a year or two ago; if you do some searching it'll come up.

Wow.

Now I would like to pull that off.

UH-1D is 57 feet long including rotor overhang, so in 1/35 scale the model will be 19.5 inches long.

1/48 is a much better scale for aircraft. There's also more choice in kits.

So 1/48 is the better? Ok then I'll look into it.

Yea I suppose it depends what your goals are. Are you willing to convert or want to use the kit as-is? 1/48 would be fine but it doesn't look capable of holding 12 Guardsmen but if you did go for a 1/35 variant you might want to end up cutting it up a bit which is not a problem if you want to convert.

Towerhobbies has the length of a 1/35 Huey at 14.25 inches: http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXBRT4&P=FR#tech

A Valk is about 12"; the length on their site for the 1/48 version is 10.25 inches.

A downside to 1/48 models is that when it comes to Huey's there's very little selection available compared to 1/35. You're only looking at one Huey model in the 1/48 range whereas there's a handful of 1/35 models available.

In general the range of 1/48th scale aircraft is larger and will give you access to models like the Osprey, Blackhawk and other helicopters more easily than 1/35. I don't know specifically about UH-1D, but after all, a UH-1D is a UH-1D whichever model kit firm it comes from.

It's quite true that a 1/48 scale aircraft looks too small to contain 12 GW models, however, the same is true of all GW vehicle kits -- they are all too small compared to the figures.

To me, the presence on the table of a model longer than the range of pistols and melta-guns is a potential playability issue. The body of UH-1D is maybe 14 inches long in 1/35 but you have to take into account the rotor span too, which makes it over 19 inches.

Seeing as most of the time it will be in the air (read on the stand) I don't think the length will be too much of an issue. I could always put it down to perspective.
