Today I played my first game with my new DH army. I’ve been painting the army for the past month or so, and I’ve been really excited to play. My list still needs some playtesting and tweaking before it’s ready for competitive play, but right now I think it looks pretty solid.

I played against my buddy Nathan and his mechanized Spamlamanders.

Fluff
In recent years, the presence of the Salamanders chapter of the Adeptus Astartes has been steadily growing. The Adeptus Administratum has obtained evidence to suggest that the Salamanders chapter has grown more numerous than any other chapter in Imperial history. In particular, there have been an unprecedented number of sightings of Forgefather Vulkan He’Stan. He has even been reported leading other chapters into battle, such as the Ultramarines and Imperial Fists. After further investigation, the Adeptus Astronomica declared that Daemonic beings have been spawning from the Warp in the form of Vulkan himself. According to the Inquisition, their plan is to turn the Salamanders against the Imperium. With the most powerful chapter on their side, glory would once again be restored to the Chaos Space Marines. The Ordo Malleus springs into action...

Setup
Mission: Annihilation
Deployment type: Pitched Battle
Turn: He won the die roll and took first turn.

Deployment
He placed his Land Raider behind a large LOS-blocking building in the middle of his deployment zone with vulkan, termies and librarian inside it. Attack bikes were next to it, also out of LOS. Rhinos and tactical squads in reserve.

I put my land raiders on the left side of my deployment zone. Grey knights with brother-captain were in between the two LRs prepared to embark. The two infantry squads morphed together and joined up with the canoness (to give them LD10 stubborn) and made a line in the front of my deployment zone to receive the charge from vulkan and friends. I put both of my heavy weapons teams in cover on my right flank. Inquisitor, platoon command squad were held in reserve.

My plan was to kill the attack bikes as fast as possible, and tie up his uber unit with my infantry squad. Once I had done that my grey knights would jump onto the vulkanators and hopefully finish them off. When his rhinos came onto the table I might be able to take them out for a couple more kill points. I’d try to hide the command squad and inquisitor when they came onto the table to not give up easy kill points.

Turn 1
His land raider redeemer moves forward while his bikes go after my heavy weapons squads. They kill one full HW squad and one HW base from the other unit.

I don’t move anything. I focus fire on the attack bikes, killing five out of the six.

Vulkan KPs – 1
DH KPs – 2

Turn 2
One rhino comes in. He moves it behind the big LOS-blocking building. The Redeemer moves forward into the open and pops smoke. His last attack bike shoots at and charges my heavy weapons squad. He kills one HW team; the other fails morale and is cut down. Meanwhile, Vulkan and his buddies hop out of the LRR and charge my infantry squad. They are only within charge distance by about a quarter of an inch. My guardsmen were able to kill one terminator, and IIRC 10 guardsmen died. They stayed put due to the LD 10 and stubborn Canoness. That’s why she’s there!

My command squad comes onto the table. I move them into a ruin on the far left of the board, and they order themselves to get a 2+ cover save. Grey Knights hop into their land raiders. I kill the last attack bike, and I shoot all my lascannons at his LRR. They don’t even scratch the paint. In the big assault I don’t kill a single terminator, but my canoness, who happens to be awesome, kills the librarian. I lose another seven or so guardsmen, but once again they pass morale and stick around.

Vulkan KPs – 2
DH KPs – 4

Turn 3
His second tactical squad comes onto the table. Both rhinos speed down my left flank, popping smoke. His LRR’s multi-melta takes a lascannon off my right land raider. Vulkan and friends finally kill the canoness and the last remaining guardsmen.

My inquisitor comes onto the table this turn. I bring him onto the board on my far right flank, hugging the table edge. At this point I decide to just avoid the Vulkanators. I drive my land raiders to the right to protect the Inquisitor and keep away from the termies. My land raider which just had one lascannon blown off by the LRR, then scores a Weapon Destroyed damage result on the redeemer and takes off the multi-melta. Sweet revenge! My command squad shoots at a rhino, but don’t do any damage. They await their doom.

Vulkan KPs – 4
DH KPs – 4

Turn 4
His termies hop back into the LRR while the tactical squads disembark and zomgwtf my command squad.

I keep driving my land raiders towards the right table edge. By now they are about 6 inches from it. They also block LOS to the Inquisitor. Lascannons fire at the LRR, but get bounced. Only things I have left on the table at this point are my 2 land raiders with grey knights inside and my Inquisitor.

Vulkan KPs – 5
DH KPs – 4

Turn 5
His LRR drives towards my surviving units. Rhinos stay where they are; because he’s too far to get the tactical squads into range, and the rhinos are easy kill points for my land raiders. Termies disembark and charge the closest land raider, but they’re hitting on 6 so no damage is taken.

I move up the table edge, still blocking my Inquisitor from being shot or assaulted. I make sure to move at cruising speed to prevent the thunder hammers from harming my land raiders. Once again I shoot at his LRR and again he takes no damage.

Vulkan KPs – 5
DH KPs – 4

I roll to see if the game ends, and I roll a 3. The inquisition is granted another chance at victory.

Turn 6
Same as last turn. LRR is blocked from shooting at the Inquisitor, and the hammernators can’t hit the LRs.

I move forward and shoot at the land raider redeemer. Finally, after shooting lascannons at it all game, I wreck it. It exploded, but no termies were killed in the explosion.

Vulkan KPs – 5
DH KPs – 5

Nathan rolls a one and the game ends in a draw. In terms of kill points, I had almost 700 while he had a bit over 500. I could say a lot of things but all in all it was just a good game. I couldn’t use my faith points because my Canoness was helping my infantry boys pass their morale tests. I am still considering a few options for my list such as swapping my land raiders for crusaders or inducting a SoB squad. Thoughts on these would be appreciated.

Thanks for reading.

I agree, you should put a SoB squad in. Because of their higher LD mainly. Also, you say you used your faith points to stop your Ips from running away. Waht about the pcs and get back in the fight?

When did I use Faith to stop them from running away? What I did was attach my Canoness to the infantry squad. She is LD10 and stubborn, which gives them a very high chance of staying in close combat. If they didn't have Stubborn they'd have been testing at like -8 morale, which would give me a very low chance of staying.

Well the report was well done. The only comment I have is that a Brother-Captain can't use a targeter. It is not an asterik item on the DH wargear list.

I didn't mean my comment in that way. You shouldn't of bothered to let your cannoness look after your guard. You should have freed her up and used her separately, utilising her faith-point abilities. Let the guardsmen run away, then use the pcs' get back in the fight.

I posted some fluff up near the top. It's pretty silly, but it was fun to write.

Platoon command squads don’t have Get Back in the Fight. Only company command squads do.

So basically my options were:
A) Attach Canoness to infantry squad and delay the Vulkanators for 3 rounds.
B) Keep Canoness seperate from the infantry squad. The infantry squad gets smacked off the table by the Vulkanators. Canoness likely gets killed by multi-meltas.

I’m not sure about you, but I prefer option A. I’m not trying to be defensive here (I know I’m coming across that way), just trying to explain how important it is that the Canoness is attached to the infantry squads when the opponent brings uber units. Delaying Vulkan and his cronies for 3 rounds of assault was the main reason why I was able to pull out a draw against the Spamlamanders.

Don't worry about coming across as defensive lol.
So pcss don't have get back in the fight? That sucks.
